Athletic Association has ruled that exchange student Hartmut Ortmann is ineligible to participate in athletics at Lower Cape May High School. Th£NJSIAA ruled that Ortmann, of Bremhaven, Germany, is not in ah approved exchange program and was brought here for athletic reasons. Lower may be forced to forfeit football games that Ortmann participated in this past fall. Ortmann played in the last five Tiger games, serving as a place-
kicker.
How this situation came to light is still a mystery. Some think that another school alerted the NJSIAA about Ortmann with hopes that he would be ineligible for the basketball season. Ortmann stands 6-feet-8 and was the center of the Lower team. Lower Cape' May principal Alan Beattie mayhave opened the can of worms himself when he wrote to the NJSIAA concerning the use of a visa to verify Ortm^nn’s age. I hope more information becomes available on this matter because I don’t understand the reason^ behind the decision. Participating in all high school activities like plays and sports is all part of the educational experience. With Ortmann gone from the lineup, Lower Cape May will have to work even harder to keep up in the CAL II this basketball season that got under way last Friday. Lower was not . in action in boys’ play, but the other four Cape May County teams were, three in barnburners. HIGHLY REGARDED Wildwood needed to hang on against Pleasantville to capture its first contest of

the year. Transfer Mike Schafer pulled 16 rebounds and scored 21 points to lead the Warriors. Pleasantville overcame a 10-point deficit to close to within one with just four seconds remaining. With just one tick left on the clock, Greg Cardaci converted a free throw to give Wildwood the 63-61
win.
SENIOR JOE AITA led the way for Wildwood Catholic with 23 points as the Crusaders slipped past Buena 58-57. The contest went right down to the wire as Jimmy Barnes connected from 16 feet out to put W.C. in front to stay with just over a minute to play. A bright note for Coach St. 'John was sophomore Alex Mairone. Mairone canned 16 in his first varsity game. MIDDLE TOWNSHIP traveled to Vineland last week to open its season against Sacred Heart. They were extended into overtime, but l * Panthers came away with a 77-75 victory. The two teams were tied at 67 after regulation. With standout Homer Baker playing a reserve role, Ocean City finally fell to Atlantic City. O.C. played three good quarters before falling behind and eventually losing 71-58. Gene Watts led the Red Raiders in scoring with 17 points. THE CONTEST for the girls in the Ocean CityAtlantic City rivalry went just as the boys did. The Red Raiders once again held on until the final stanza before losing by eleven, 61-50. A.C., the defending CAL I champs, could have broken it wide open, but.the | Raiders never folded. ’ Sophomore Lisa Crompton’s 14 points spearheaded the Ocean City attack that only managed the lead once and that was in the first minute of 4>lay. The Raiders played most of the game with three juniors and two sophs on the floor. Only improvement for this young ,team that has already shown- that it can play with the best in the league. Wildwood Catholic opened its defense of the CAL II title by walking all over Buena 52-29. Michelle
Bacino scored 17 and Kelly Caruso hit for 14 for the Crusaders. W.C. built up an ll point halftime lead at Sl-lQ-and never werfe thieatened the rest of the
w*y.
Shelley Ridgeway scored 20 points to lead Middle Township past highly regarded Sacred Heart, 55-44. Donna Dickerson scored 12 points and came through with a few defensive gems in the third quarter as Middle took command. The offense was run effectively by Lori Collins who had 10 assists. . Wildwood used a wideopen offense in its 10-point win over Pleasantville. Audra Coleman had 23 points for the Warriors who started the season on the road. After a 5-5 first quarter, Wildwood opened things up with 14 in the second period to gain a lead they never relinquished.

HEAVYWEIGHTS highlighted the beginning of the wrestling season last Saturday, but for Middle Township, the last match was only their second win on the night. St. Augustine dominated Middle 51-9 as only two Middle wrestlers picked up wins. Heavyweight Steve Jones tallied a pin the second period for six points and Phil Brown hung on to
win his match, 7-4. Ocean City heavyweight Richard Snyder pinned his man in just 15 seconds to highlight a five first-period fall evening for O.C. as it clubbed Atlantic City 50-15. Other Red Raiders recording early pins included Tim Givens at 122 pounds, Kevin Clarke (138), Steve Leypoldt (132), Matt Ward (105) and Bob Macom (167). REMARKS: The season is finally over for the Philadelphia Eagles and it’s a g/Rod thing they lost to St. Dmis. Now they will pick fourth in next year’s college draft and Irving Fryer should still be available at that time. Fryer will give Mike Quick, who had a pro-bowl year, help on the other side while solving the Eagles’ kick return problems. Now it’s time to go out on a limb and make predictions for Super Bowl XXVIII. I might be crazy, but I like Seattle and Dallas for next month’s championship game. Dallas will play Washington once again in the N.F.C. finals and the Cowboys will not play as bad as they did a few weeks ago. Seattle on the other hand may meet the L.A. Raiders for the third time in the playoffs and the Seahawks won both games during the season.
