AVALON — A joint promotion - project of the Borough of Avalon and Uie State Division of- Travel and Tourism to attract small conventions and seminars has been started according to Mayor Rachel H. Sloan. Avalon, through its advertising and promotion
agency, prepared a grant application during the spring and was awarded a $2,900 matching grant early this fall. v ~'~~ The program, a $5,800 promotional campaign, is aimed at attracting small conventions and sales seminars to Avalon in the off-season.
“We have a great resort area for small groups that want a relaxing oceanfront setting for their meetings,” the mayor said. “We have excellent restaurants and luxury motels that can accommodate these types of groups. If we can encourage this type of visitor, it will help the business

community in the Spring and Fall periods," the mayor stated. "THE TYPE OF conventions and sales seminars we want to attract are couples or family oriented. In Avalon or close proximity to us, we have many historic sites or points of interest for the other family members not directly in- - volved with the meetings. We have many activities such as fishing, boating, sailing, tennis and others j that are naturals for the visitors to this type of conventions or meetings,” Mayor Sloan went on. It is hoped that realtors and others will prepare a packet of information on Avalon to be distributed to all persons registering for such meetings. “We want the entire business community to be part of this- promotion. Each business can benefit from new sources of income brought into our economy by this business”, Sloan stated. An advertising program to executive, sales planners and conventionoriented publications has been planned. The program is being worked in conjunction with the State Division of Travel - / andd Tourism under the directorship of Victoria
Schmidt.
“We are extremely happy to be one of the few restorts in the state to be chosen for a matching fund program, Sloan said. “It is great that a small resort area can compete among the large one today.”
