Crusader Girls Spark Interest in Basketball
Interest in girls basketball here in Cape May County has reached a high note thanks to the WUdwood Catholic criistatoix.'thad a chance to see W.C. play last week and it was a real treat. The balanced attack of coach Matt Tomlin downed a very good Cardinal O’Hara squad from Philadelphia 61-50. Point guard Mary Gavin led all scorers with 16 points while dishing out many assists. The Crusaders led wire to wire in the contest but were challenged in the fourth quarter. O’Hara fouled several times in that final quarter and each time a Catholic player stepped in the line and canned the one-and-onc. What impressed me most about the Crusader team was the ability of each player to handle a different role when called upon.< Four different players handled the point in the offense, keeping O’Hara’s defense from concentrating on one player. On defense, Wildwood Catholic can play a tough man-to-man and also a wide-open zone. Following Gavin in the scoring parade were Dorann Vallese and Janice Boyle, each with a dozen points. THE ONLY weakness I could see in this fine team is the lack of height inside. Jackie Cowan and Michelle Bacino handle the chores as forwards but they lack the ability to face the hoop before making a move on offense. Anyway, it looks now as if the 2 and 0 Crusaders will

have anotlter great season in the CAL II and maybe a state championship. We will have to wait and see. Lower Cape May trailed by nine points at the end of the first half against Sacred Heart, and things went downhill from there. The Tigers couldn’t put together an effective offense in the second half, losing 69-46. Lydia Valentine scored 18 points to lead the Tigers. Elsewhere, Hammonton used slow-down tactics to upset Wildwood 32-31. The Warriors let a three-point lead slip away early in the fourth stanza, which saw the Blue Devils outscore the visitors 11-6. Ann Turner paced the Wildwood squad with 11 points. The Warriors’ record slipped to 1-1 with
the loss.
Ocean City evened its record at 1-1 with a 62-36 victory at the expense of an out-matched Vineland team. O.C. jumped out to an easy 14-6 lead after the first quarter and never gave up the lead the rest of
the way.
Leading scorers for the Raiders included Lisa Crompton with 16, Trish Levin with 15 and Margie Bonnet with 14. IN BOYS’ action, the combination of Mike Schafer and Bill Osborn look like the main force to deal with this winter in the CAL II. The two Wildwood stars teamed for 43 points in a 74-57 win over Hammonton. At the half, the Warriors were in control, leading by 19 points, and never looked back after that. Schafer ruled the center position, hitting for 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds while Osborn canned 21, including nine in the third period. Middle Township had its record fall to 1 and l on the year as the Panthers were Ways Eyed To Rescue Stripers TRENTON - To halt the continuing decline in the striped bass population, New Jersey, with other Atlantic coastal states, is considering a management plan which would include stricter, uniform regulations among the states
affected.
It is believed that under normal conditions about 80 percent of the migratory stripers in coastal waters fnam Maine to North Cafdlina originate in Cbeskpeake Bay. Recently the State of Maryland announced that its 1983 sampling of young of the year striped bass in the bay had reached the second lowest total in 30 years. Measures under consideration to conserve the striped bass and let them regain population levels which will support both commercial and recreational fishing include uniform regulations among the coastal states, increasing the legal minimum I from 18 inches (now the law in New Jersey i to 24 inches, and tighter restrictions on the catch limit and sale of the stripers.
dumped by St. Augustine 71-68 in an overtime contest. Mark Adams was the hero for a short time in the game as he hit a long jumper at the buzzer to tie the game at the end of regulation. Adams finished with 22 points in the game which saw the Hermits overcome a seven-point Panther lead after three quarters. In another close game. Sacred Heart used a strong defense in the closing minutes to hold off Lower Cape May 40-39. Steve Brunetta led the way for Sacred Heart with 16 markers, including a layup following a steal with just over a minute to play. Pat Holden topped the Tigers in the scoring column with 16 points. L.C.M. remained winless at 0-2 on
the year.
OCEAN CITY star Homer Baker topped the 1,000 point total for his career as the Raiders downed Vineland 71-56. Dennis Jones led Raider scorers with 20 markers in the CAL I victory. Gene Watts and Joe Jones contributed with 14 and 11 points respectively as the Raiders evened their record at 1 and 1 on the
season.
After downing Atlantic
City in their first match of the season, Ocean City wrestlers found the going tough in Vineland. Vineland won the contest
37-27.
Matt Ward led the Raiders with a pin at 5:39 in his match and Trip Snyder put his man on his back in the secorid period to also record a pin. Lightning Dimensions of the Cape May men’s volleyball league nave been playing up to their name so far this season, flashing to the top spot recently with a 25-6 record. Library II holds down the . second spot with the Spikers in third. On the women’s ledger, the Needlers have moved to the top spot followed by The Shire and Kona Ladies in second and third. The men’s rec league is led by Breakwater. Oh, what love for the game. Ted Wenner of the Avalon Golf Club fired a 40-38-78 to take a second place finish at the seventh annual • Delaware Valley Winter Golf League. Some 25 pros competed in frigid weather for the title at the Hi-Point Golf Club in Ivy land. Pa. REMARKS:
There are a lot of happy college basketball coaches around lately. The N.C.A.A. decided last week to drop that silly two-shot rule for fouls committed in the last two minutes of the game. Players were attacking the opposition because all fouls were worth the same. Changing the rule will put a lot of the coaching back into the
game as well as making the poor foul shooters hit the
first shot.
The N.B.A. regular refs have been back for a while now and I feel the games are now being played at its normal pace and normal fouls are being called. I’m not saying that the other refs were bad, just not right for the N.B.A. Tooch, do you agree?
