SWAINTON - Three Cape May County municipalities will share $66,400 in credits under a benefit program approved Dec. 21 by the Cape May County Municipal Utilities AWbofity-for communities solid waste facilities are located. Middle Township, in which a transfer station will be located, is expected to receive $41,800, Woodbine and Upper Township, where the new county sanitary landfill is being built, Will receive $8850 and $15,750, respectively, in

credits applied against their landfilling costs. “Hie host community benefits formula adopted differs from the one proposed earlier,” George Marinakis, MUA executive director explained. “The authority felt the benefits should be uniform and equitable and, therefore, adopted a 12.5 percent rate reduction credit plus a payment in lieu of taxes,” he said. Under the formula proposed in November, the communities hosting the landfill were to receive a 25 percent credit and the municipality where the transfer station was located was to get a 12.5 percent credit. The CMCMUA rate benefit ^program will be as afecommendation to tfae Board of Freeholders and' the Board of Public Utilities. Both agencies are required to approve it before II can go into effect Roy Gillian, MUA commissioner who lives in Ocean City, said he decided a uniform rate reduction was more appropriate after reviewing the impact on all Cape May County municipalities. “I changed my mind about the 25 percent after hearing from municipal officials, including Sea Isle City Commissioner Alan Gansert. I agreed that the municipalities hosting the solid waste facilities should receive some consideration

regarding the potential impacts they could sustain from the siting of such facilities, but I felt our policy should also be considerate of the other 13 communities,” Gillian remarked. The formula for the rate reduction credit for the three communities is based on the solid waste tonnage from the previous year multiplied by the 12.5 percent figure and by the tipping fee charged for disposal of solid waste at the facility. In addition, a credit equal to the municipality’s taxable income received from the property during the previous year will be included to provide for the immediate loss of this retable because of the nonprofit nature of the CMCMUA.

What Else Can an Old School Ask?

PALERMO - Upper Township’s historic Friendship School here, a one-room school house that served township students beginning in 1830, also has a historic flag — one that originally flew over the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Now all it needs is a flagpole from which to fly the flag. That, officials say, is expected to be delivered soon, and to be installed by Spring. Through Congressman William Hughes, Mayor Leonard Migliaccio obtained the flag, which he presented to Mrs. Virginia Wilson, president of the Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township, at a ceremony at the restored and rebuilt school recently. A new cedar flagpole was donated to the society by Deauville Inn owners Walter and Gloria Carpenter.
