MORE BURGLARIES in Bayside Village, Villas, were reported to police last week, but may have been committed during Thanksgiving Week when police were notified about eight break-ins there. Township Police Det. Frank Majane speculated Friday. Lt. Charles Thornton confirmed last month that eighl burglaries were executed through rear doors of development homes. The recently-reported breakins might have neen committed the same week, noted Majane, but remained undetected until vacationing or seasonal homeowners returned to their Bayside houses. Thornton recommended last month that residents equip their sliding glass doors with inexpensive locking devices, available at most hardware stores, that would reduce the risk of burglary. Police are still investigating the* break-ins, Majane concluded, and no suspects are in custody. FIRE DESTROYED the 39-foot cabin cruiser, Taurus," and damaged two other boats at the Portofino Marina off Ocean Drive in Cold Spring Harbor just before 8 a.m. Friday, Majane reported later that day. "The thing's on the bottom,'' he said of Philadelphian Edward Meyer’s $100,000 plea us re craft. . The fire was discovered by a man staying aboard the 33-foot cabin cruiser.

"Triangle,'’ owned byWilliam Filippo of Philadelphia and berthed near the "Taurus ” The “Triangle” and a 38-foot cabin cruiser, owned by Marit Di Santo of Norristown, Pa., were damaged by the blaze, Majane said. Fifty to 75 firefighters, from Cape May and Erma companies, battled the flames with Coast Guardsmen aboard 44- and 55-foot rescue craft equipped with/ water.pumps and hoses. After the "Taurus" sank, the Coast Guard was left the task of cleaning up 300 gallons of gasoline that leaked into the marina from the wreck, Majane said. > LISTED AS "suspicious” and of "undetermined origin," the Dec. 23 fire that damaged the Whale House Tavern on Bayshore Road. Villas, was still under investigation last week by township, state and county lawmen. Township Patrolman James Moy discovered Hje 3:40 a.m. blaze. Villas firemen battled the flames for three hours. The bar was closed and no injuries were reported. WHALE HOUSE representatives were served with a summons last month to appear before township comrkittee and answer charges of "lewd and immoral activity at the tavern,’* serving intoxicated patrons, after-hour liquor sales, etc. That hearing has twice been postponed; it is now tentatively scheduled for Jan. 9 but Township Clerk Claudia Kammer said last week she suspected the hearing will be rescheduled a third time. KAMMER VOLUNTEERED last Wednesday to inform citizens planning to attend the 7:30 p.m. township committee meeting, that the session and public bearings then were canceled because of a death in the family of Mayor Peggie Bieberbach. About 12 people were turned away, she said. The meeting and hearings on proposed ordinances — creating an incinerator authority and
amending the zoning code to settle a developers' suit have alro been rescheduled fiv Jan. 9. ARSON CASES against f'il Olexa. 18 of North dre May and his brother, .•vin, 21, of North Vildwood, have "been forwarded to the county proutor’s office for grand /jury action,” Township /Det. Frank Majane reported Friday. Russell Olexa was charged last month with setting three fires last fall at the Acme market in the North Cape May Shopping Center, Lt Charles Thomton confirmed in December. One blaze, he said, caused $50,000475,000 damage to a trailer filled with food. Kevin Olexa was arrested for allegedly torching Cape TVElectronics, Bayshore and Town Bank roads, in November 1982, Thornton said. The $50,000 fire destroyed the-business, he added. Kevin Olexa was also charged with burglary
and theft in connection with last January and March break-ins at Lower Cape May Regional High School, Cold Spring, the lieutenant added. Police recovered 46,000-$7,000 in band, stereo, camera and electronic equipment stolen from the school, be said. “That’s all we’ve got so far," Thornton said when announcing the arrests on Dec. 12, adding that the investigation would continue. Charges against the brothers he reported wily represent “the highlights of the cases against them, though," Majane said Friday. County Arson Investigator Todd Pierce is handling those cases for the county prosecutor’s office. He was unavailable for comment on any additional charges against the brothers before The Lantern holiday deadline, however. SOMERS CORSON, acting curator of the county Historical Society, will address The Gardening by the Sea Club at its 10 a m. meeting today in the court room of Township Hall, Bayshore Road, Villas. CAPE STAMP CLUB members will meet Monday at 7 p.m. in the township Recreation Center.
