. JANUARY is the time for making plans; it’s a good month for studying seed catalogs. You can sense the added minutes of daylight and while we’re still knee deep in winter — and will continue to be for quite a spell — the

season is starting uphill to spring. Think spring!

For the next few weeks though we are quite likely to be held in winter’s grip, even though the days are getting longer. You’ve heard the old saying, "W en the days begin to lengthen, then the cold begins to strengthen." Our shortest day in the year comes in December, but our boldest days often come in February — more than a month later. This is because the ocean has absorbed so much hear during the summer that it is still warming the air over it well into the winter, and when this air blows over

the land it warms it, too.

But by the time February has arrived the oceaiTs stored heat has been given up and we are not warmed by it any longer. Then in the summer it works the other way. The ocean water says cold long after the land begins to get warm in the spring and summer. So that’s why here in the east our winters are a little warmer and our summer a little cooler than places farther west, because we live so

close to the ocean.

Have you been watching the noon shadow lately’? If it is clear at noon today or tomorrow, look carefully and see if your shadow is as long as it was just before Christmas. Also, watch the point of sunset on any clear evening this week and see if the sun goes down over the same chimney or roof corner that it did last week and the week before. While we’re talking about the heavens, here some heavenly places to enjoy this week: CAPT’N ARAB’S Reopening tomorrow. Frank & Jean Bonner (The Captain & His Mate) ha*e been talking a well deserved rest from running their charming Capt’N Ahab’s restaurant on Route 47 (Wildwood Blvd.) between Rt. 9 & Garden State Parkway, Rio Grande. But, tomorrow night the Bonner's will be at their accustomed places welcoming guests to their comfortable eating establishment. As always, the food will be “inspired” cuisine, featuring ocean fresh broiled or fried fish, lobster, clams, prime rib, chicken and Italian specialties. The daily specials cost a mere $6.95 and are excellent. Come enjoy good food 4 quiet dining in a special atmosphere. - LA PALMA — worthy of praise. We’ve chosen La Palma Italian/American Restaurant, at 2100 Bayshore Rd., Villas as a restaurant worthy of recognition. La Palma specializes in pastas, fresh seafood, as well as dai-
