COURT HOUSE - January' is Alfred Hitchcock month at the Cape May County Library. The Library is celebrating the genius of Hitchcock’s directing ability by devoting a month-long film series to this gifted artist. January 6, there will be a showing of The Lady Vanishes, Hitchcock’s last and most celebrated British film. The story concerns an elderly English governess whose disappearance from a train sets off a string of mysterious incidents. The pace never slackens as Hitchcock keeps the tension mounting until the final scene. The Lady Vanishes is quintessential Hitchcock, complete with a beautiful .heroine, a perplexed hero, international spies, and a train journey, all set admidst much suspense. This 1938 thriller stars Michael Redgrave, Margaret Lockwood and Dame May

Whitty.

January 13 will bring The Man Who Knew Too Much to the library. Made in 1934 with Peter Lorre, Leslie Banks and Edna Best, this film abounds in Hitchcock’s familiar trademarks such as blonde heroines, obsessive mothers, and a biting wit. ■ His films are also marked by a recurring theme: that of the innocent, ordinapr person caught up in dangerous events which he or she cannot control. A common subtheme involves characters who wish for excitement to invade their otherwise mundane lives. In keeping with the Hitchcock tradition, the MacKennas family will ultimately face excitement and terror when they become pawns of an assassination plot. On July 20, the film selection is Secret Agent, taken from author Somerset Maugham’s smashing thriUo*. The story focuses on a man declared dead so he can travel all over the continent under an alias in order to track down a

riiaster criminal. A young woman played by Madeline Carroll joins in few the thrills only to become a captive of the enemy agent. A fantastic train wreck exposes the real culprit in this action paced drama starring Peter Lorre, Robert Young and John Gielgud. January 27, the last evening of the Hitchcock festival, «we will show The 39 Steps. 'Filmed in 1935', this is Hitchcock at his best. It manages to blend comedy and suspense to just the bright degree. Hitchcock has described this, based on a novel by John Buchan, as one of his favorites. The 39 Steps features Richard Hannay (Robert Donat), a Canadian living in London who innocently becomes involved with a secret organization of spies trying to smuggle defense secrets out of the country. The innocent becomes the object of a tremendous manhunt by the police for murder and the spies for information. This film series is tree and open to the public, every Friday beginning at 7 p.m’.'at the Main Branch of the library on Mechanic Styeet.
