Clinic Aims to Help Smokers Give Up

COURT HOUSE - For people who .benefit from group support in their efforts to quit smoking,'the Country Health Department is sponsoring a Freedom from Smoking clinic program designed to help smokers kick their habit permanently. The six-session clinic will begin Jan. 24 and finish Feb. 28.. Sessions will be held at ght “This is a brand new clinic m^of} 1 " 3111 '’' said Andrew Mclchiorre, “which the American Lung Association has spent five years developing and testing across the country.” In those tests, 80-90 percent of femokers who attended the&inic quit smoking during the clinic. -IN TESTING. 12 months after the end of the clinic, 30 percent of the participants had not smoked in the past month," said Melchiorre. One in five had

not smoked at all since the end of the clinic. Almost all 93 percent of-those who had not quit completely said they would try again. The clinic, he said, emphasized unlearning a habit and .does not involve scare tactics. "We try to make quitting a less stressful experience and • help ‘ smokers figure' out better ways to cope with situations that ordinarily trigger their lighting up,” ^Melchiorre said. An orientation session to introduce smokers to the program, will be held at the Cape Miy County Health Department . There is a fee for the program Enrollment is limited; advance registration is required More information is available from the Cofcnty Health Department, Crest Haven Complex, Cape May Court House. 08^10 The phone number is 465-7911, Ext. 208

the Department of Environmental Protection. The township received estimated figures totaling $296,317 last Wednesday for the calendar year ,5984. That figure includes $56,512 for dumping at the Mar-tee landfill through May and . $240,805 for .dumping at the new MU A landfill through December. Committeeman CHUck Leusner said that "the proposed figures are staggering: “I am very concerned bow we can place our taxpayers in a squeeze like this'' In 1983, the township budgeted $75,000 for landfill fees but had to transfer $25,000 to get through the year. Committeeman - Jim Alexis said that this places the township in a critical situation and underscores the need to expand the recycling program in the township immediately, “For every ton of recycle — we can save tbat equivalent amount in tipping fees,” Alexis said. Voll, who has been an outspoken critic of the MUA) said he isn’t going to let. the MUA hold the residents of Middle Township hostage. “1 am astonished that'the cost for solid waste disposal is $300,000. I believe Middle Township should explore ev§ry possibility of working joinUy with Lower Township to form an in- ! cinerator site and burn ouh L solid waste in environmen t a 1 l*y approved incinerators.”
