Sinkers: Everything You Wanted to Know

Fishing is jpo different than any other activity one gets involved with, be it recreation or work . As. aresult, it becomes apparent that no matter how much one knows, there is still a lot more to be learned. Someone many years ago said that once 6ne assumes he knows everything about something he will stop

learning >

Save for eating, sleeping and breathing. I have been fishing longer tlgan anything else 1 do in life. I

made up my fishing line. My pole was cut from a

' Money being relatively unavailable in our growing up years, it took 10 years to be able to walk into a store with enough money to plank down on the counter for a rod, reel, an assortment of lures, a tackle box and some other odds and ends of tackle. While tackle was hard to come by-in those early year's, knowledge came a lot easier after I mastered the

One reader queried us on sinkers. His question dealt with the sizes shapes and uses of the various types. Basically,. sinkers are something used to get your bait down on or near, the bottom. Sometimes sinkers get the line somewhere between the bottom €nd the surface so that the bait is at the level where the fish are

feeding.

BANK SINKERS: A long sinker with a bottom which bulges out and an eye at the narrow end. Weight ranges

when wave action pounds on the line. . PYRAMID OR DIAMOND sinkers: Three- or four-sided with the eye in the heavy (or top) end of the. sinker. Designed to •dig’ into the sand for surfcasters. Diamond sinkers; are flat on two sides. They can be made to bold better by adding screws which are screwed into the lead on both flat surfaces. PIN-CUSHION sinkers: Usually round with two flat sides. Size is from to 4.

Actually round like a ball with an eye to fasten to the end of the line Used on coral or rocky bottom since it will'not hang up too much. Not widely used in this area. EGG (IN-LINE) sinkers: Usually egg shaped with a hole through from one end to the other. When fished from an anchored boat, the egg sinker is slid over the line and allows the line to slip through when a fish picks up the bait. Also used to weigh down trolling lures for blues and other game fish. Use a swivel in the' line at the point where you want the egg sinker to stop ahead of the, lure. WRAP-AROUND sinkers: Usually thin strips of lead which can be ‘wrapped’ around the line ahead of a light lure to add casting weight. Primarily used in fresh water or very light tackle fishing in salt * water. IN-LINE (TROLUNG) sinkers: Elongated sinkers with eyes in both ends. Some are equipped with snaps. These are used well ahead of trolling lures to, get the lure down below the surface. While they might not be classified as sinkers, wire line used for deep trolling and lead-core line, which is primarily for deep water fishing in fresh water, also i serve to get the lures down to where the fish are. Most sinkers are made of lead, a small piece of lead provides a lot of density and sinks quickly as a result. As to the amount of lead to use, if you want to fish the bottom, use only as much lead as is needed to get your line down quickly and sufficient to keep it there while you are fishing Heavy tide or faster drift dictates using heavier lead. PORK RIND: We have been asked about use of pork rind in salt water. Pork rind can .be used to give action to bucktails and to trolling rigs. A piece of pork rind can improve the catching qualities of trolled spoons, hootchies, bucktails, feathers and cedar plugs. Pork rind also can improve action on jigs and tin squids in the surf. Jetty fishermen have used pork rind on bucktails while casting for blues, stripers, and weakfish. Pork rind now is being made in a ripple cut which works like the Mr. Twister plastic worm. Pork rind also comes in colors. NYLON VS. MONO Vs. Dacron: Few anglers if any are using twisted linen line any more. A few might be using braided nylon. Most are using mono or dacron. There are advantages. Mono has some stretch which can work for and against the angler. The stretch allows a margin of error when fighting a fish. It also makes it harder to set a book if there is too much line out.* Dacron has practically no stretch. It sinks quicker, and is usualV ‘ smaller in diameter, pound test for pound test, then mono. Most dacron users troll with it. Dacron makes good casting line for light tackle bait casting and works best for surf fishing when used on magnetic (no back lash reels) which do not require thumb pressure to stop over-runs.
