'CAPE MAY - The powerful Needlers took on the ever improving Thunder &, Roses team in the initial meeting in Women’s Volleyball action last week. Game one saw the Needlers break gut to ( an early 7-3 lead behind the fine serving of Marion Lomack. Thunder & Roses managed to tie the score at 8-8 behind the fine allaround play of Elaine Bennick. Jan MacKenzie. and Donna. Julianl. The Needlers then stiffened their defense . to iimit Thunder £ Roses to two points for the remainder of the game as they went on to win 15-10. The Needlers again took a 7-3 lead in the early going of game two, however, an ankle injury to Michelle Bird evened the teams to five players each and Thunder & Roses took advantage of the open court to notch a 15-10 victory. 'In. the deciding game Paige Huber’s fine court coverage lifted.the Needlers to a 6-0 lead in the early going. The Needlers added to their advantage, compiling a 12-4 lead before Thunder & Roses made a comeba’ck attempt. With the score 14-10 Needlers, Thunder & Rose held off the Needlers on four game points before finally yielding the game point and losing 15-10. , IN THE SECOND match the Shire had its way with Havin’ Fun as they swept three games. Game one featured the serving of the Shire’s Sue McKee hs it took an early 7-1 lead. The lead proved to be too much for Havin’ Fun. It could

manage just seven points for the game as the Shire wor. easily 15-7 . The Shire looked/ even more impressive in game JWo as-it completely stifled Havin’ Fuh> offense, shutting it out 15-0. The Shire completed the sweep by winning 15-6 despite the fine play of Havin’ Fun’s Bobby MetfceL The last match was a make-up between the surprising Thunder & Roses team and the powerful Kona Girls. In game one Thunder & Roses’ Jan MacKenzie continued to play well after a fine performance early in the even-' ing as Thunder & Roses took an early 4-0 lead. Denise Zimmerman and Shirley Ludman brought Kona back with fine allaround play as their team took a one-point lead at 5-4.

Kona widened its lead to 11-4 behind the strong back row play of Kathy Strang. Thunder & Roses’ Jan MacKenzie led a dramatic - comeback as Thunder & Roses tied the game at 13-13. Thunder & Roses then went on to win 15-13 as , MacKenzie served out the match. Kona bounced back in game two as it stiffened its defense, limited Thunder & Roses, and won convincingly 15-9. In the rubber game Thunder & Roses battled back from an early 4-0 deficit to take the lead at 13-7. Thunder & Roses then put the clamps on Kona’s offense and served out the match for a 15-7 victory. 2 Winners In Contest WILDWOOD - Wildwood High School students Barbara Mum tore and Doris Bakty authored a paper which was selected as one of four winners in the New Jersey Audubon Society' Hawk Watch competition. The -papers, which discussed identification, spotting, and classification of the different species of raptors were judged on content, clarity and com position by members of the Audubon Society. An oral presentation of the paper was made by Barbara Burke at the Hawk Watch Conference held at Toms River High School East Jan? 1?. All three girls , attended the conference along with their faculty coordinator, -Michael DiMedio.

OCEAN CITY - A 40-hour captain’s license preparation course for local boatowners and operators who want to carry’ passengers for hire will be held by Houston Marine Training Services Jan. 30 to Feb. 9. TTie course, which will prepare individuals for the U.S. Coast Guard motorboat operator, inland operator or ocean operator license exams, will include material on Rules of the Road, Navigation, Seamanship and safety Regulations Classes will be held for nine nights at All Seasons Marina, 34th Street, Marmora. CLASSES WILL, be taught by Charles Juechter of Houston Marine Training Services, a division of Houston Marine Con-, sultants, Inc.; of New Orleans. Juechter is a former U.S. Coast Guard officer who has commanded several cutters and holds his Merchant Marine Master’s license. For more information on the course, contact Jeannette Keller at 1-800-535-8803. The U.S. Coast Guard will be conducting licensing exams in Ocean City on Feb. 9. Interested persons can obtain license applications from either the New York Coast Guard Office or Houston Marine.
