A grave mistake takes place in many American homes every day. It’s actually a fatal assumption. One day you see blood in the bowel movement, or bleed from ygur rectum. Ahah! Hemorrhoids, you think and rush out to buy one ot the well advertised preparations. Not so fast! How do you know for sure you have hemorrhoids? Bleeding from the rectum is one of the major warning signs of colon cancer. Precious time can be wasted in reaching this diagnosis^ if proper dianostic steps were not taken before settling upon hemorrhoids as the answer. Bleeding from the rectum is considered to be due to hemorrhoids only after the other causes of such bleeding have been investigated and eliminated. Diagnostic studies will include an X-ray of the lower digestive tract, possible a barium enema, and the insertion of a thin flexible viewing scope up the anus to check for polyps or cancer. TCalled signoidoscopy if part way up the colon, colonoscopy if all the way \up.) Unfortunately your doctor cannot tell if you have hemorrhoids simply by feeling the anus. Let’s learn more aobut hemorrhoids, as this is a common medical problem. Hemorrhoids (piles) are essentially varicose veins of your anus. The anus is the last inch of your rectum. It is made up of a circle of muscle which expands and contracts when you move your bowels. Under normal cir^ cumstances, the inside of the anus is lined with thin veins which help circulate the Wood and nutrients needed to keep the tissues alive. When these veins become swollen, we consider them to have turned into hemorrhoids.

. , ENLARGEMENT of these veins can have many causes. A common cause is straining to, raoye your bowels. Pregnancy and delivery are also known to drive up. the pressure in these veins and cause then? to expand, as do obesity, chrqnic lifting and straining to raise heavy objects, excessive sneezing or coughing, chronic constipation and a lifestyle which keeps you sitting most of the time. As the veins expand, their walls stretch and become thinner to the point where they may rupture from contact with the bowel movement as it passes by. Clots may form '' in the hemorrhoid, putting continuous pressure on the walls of the anus and causing chronic pain. Hemorrhoids can be internal and totally hidden. On occasion they may protrude from the anus, becoming external. Bleeding is the main symptom. Some people will find their bowel movements become painful and uncomfortable. External hemorrhoids tend to discharge mucous and can itch. Hemorrhoids aren’t terribly dangerous. However, some people will lose enough blood from them over time to cause iron deficiency anemia. Your biggest risk is if treatment of the hemorrhoids begins without first ruling out the possible presence of a polyp or cancer in your digestive tract. Now that you know the facts, be careful; don’t make a dangerous assumption.
