With the advent of wood stoves in the last couple of years, that is a fire call that has become all too familiar, not only in Rio Grande but throughout Cape May County and across the country. Too many people With the intention of saving hundreds of dollars on their fuel bills have smoked up their homes, ruined walls,, furniture, and carpets, and a lot of times burnt down their whole, bouse through ignorance and neglect. WHAT CAUSES (^hmney fires? Poor and improper construction and little or no maintenance. Too many times people see the economical value to wood burning and fail to investigate'the proper type of stove that is a sufficient size for .the house dr room to be heated.. prope-iy installed and in-. spected,, the rest is up to you. I RECENTLY attended a fire caused by the chimney. It. was so clogged with creosote that when it' caught fire the flame became so. intense that it cracked the block and went into the attic. Had that chimney been properly cleaned and inspected, that fire could have been avoided. Many things can be done to keep your chimney dean, including burning well seasoned wood and regular brush cleaning. However, I have found this winter that chemical cleaning is a very Safe and simple procedure. There is a . number of chemical cleaners on the market and I'm sure that most will do the job. However, I can personally vouch "for a brand called Attack. Used according to instructions the product breaks .down creosote and soot deposits and causes them to lose their adhesion and fall. The product is simply thrown on to the embers of a fire and the chemicals do the rest. This procedure along with regular inspections will help cut down your creosote and soot buildup, leaving the chimney clean with little or nothing to catch on fire. I recently had a person tell me that he filled the who'e house up with smoke when he put some cardboard boxes on their wood ,fire. Burning trash, paper. Christmas tree branches and matter other than the materials that the stove was intended for, should be strictly forbidden in your
