Warriors Still in Line For CAL II Title

At the beginning of the high school basketball seakon, many folks fdt the Wildwood Warriors had a better than average shot at winning the C.A.L. II title. Well, after an up and down season to this point, the Warriors have put themselves back in the thick of things. In a key match-up with St. Augustine last week Wildwood moved into a tie ' for second place with a 66-64 win. Bill Osborn was the hero as he hit a shot jumper with time running down to boost Wildwood’s record to 10 and 4, just two games', behind, fir.st-place Pleasantville. The turning point of the contest appeared to be the fast Warrior start in the third period as they streaked into 43-38 lead by scoring 10 unanswered points. Osborn and center "Mike Schafer finished with 18 points each and Darryl Diggs chipped in 14 for the winners. AllCAL guard Dave Orlandini paced the Hermits with 33 markers. If a couple of teams can do a number on Pleasantville, the Wildwood Warriors may just back into a title. We’ll have to wait and see. IN OTHER ACTION. Middle Township lost a tough ball game to Buena . 68-62. The upset-minded Chiefs held a seven point advantage going into the fourth period and Middle couldn’t close the gap. Robert Jones poured in 28 points for the Panthers. Lower Cape May got 16 points each from Pat Holden and Andy Boyt as the Capers trounced St. Joseph 71-55. Throughout the baIlgame, Lower added to its slim first quarter lead and pulled away. The Capers upped their record to a very respectable 10 and 6 with the victory. Ocean City’s slate ran to 10 and 6 on the season as the Raiders topped Holy Spirit 70-58. In the fourth quarter, O.C. hit on 13 of 16 free throw to thwart a Spartan comeback. Homer Baker led the scoring parade with 22. Gene Watts had 15 while Bob Straub and Joe Jones tallied 12 apiece. Pleasantville continued its assault oft first place at the expense of the Wildwood Catholic Crusaders. After the Greyhounds held a 32-14 halftime edge, W.C. battled back in the fourth stanza with 25 points, but fell short in losing 65-52. Alex Mairone canned 20 points in the loss that dropped the T _Crusaders to 3 and 10. 1 Not much has changed in girls’ action. Wildwood Catholic kept a strangle bold on the top spot with a 70-34 thumping of Pleasantville. The Crusaders coasted behind Mary Gavin’s 23 points to its 14th win of the year against only two loses. Kelly Caruso chipped in 15 for the first place Wildwood Catholic squad. MIDDLE TOWNSHIP ran up a 46-16 halftime lead against Buena then walked away with a 85-41 victory. Super soph Jennifer Snyder scored 20 points to pace the Panthers. Shelly Ridgeway supported Snyder with 12 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists in a great allaround game. Also adding

to the balanced attack ware Donna Dickerson with 14 points and Melissa Grant had 17. Myra Valentine poured in 24 points to lead Lower Cape May past St. Joseph 56-41. Lower woo the battle of the boards as Valentine had ^ght boards and linda Hal be pulled down nine rebounds. Guard Betsey Craig had 13 for the Capers as they raised this year’s record to 4 and 7. ean City was 36-22 in the sehalf on the way to losing to' Holy Spirit 61-40. Marge Bonnet reached double figures for the Raiders with 10 points. WHEN YOUR TEAM is behind 30-0 in a wrestling match, what do you do? Give up. Not the Middle Township Panthers. Mid-

dle trailed by that count against Egg Harbor and came back to win 33-30. The upper weights provided the needed points with Bill Fausey turning things around with a win at 140 pounds. Later, Chip Camp, Steve O'Neal and Steve Jones recorded pins to finish off the comeback. Tom Givens (115), Steve Leypoldt (135), Kevin Clarke (141), Dave Redding (148), Roger McLarnoo (170) and John Gunnels (188) aU recorded pins as Ocean City outmanned Admiral Farragut 54-11 last week. Lower Township also hit the 50 point mark in a match against Wildwood Catholic. John Porter raised his record to 164) at 148 with a second period pin uv the division II rout. Sean Brennan moved to 15 and 1

on the year with a decision at 158 and Bill Kane made short work of his match, recfrding a fall at: 53 of the first period. In Lower’s other match last week, the Capers took . care of Buena 56-11. In that match Kane used only 21 seconds to get a pin in the heavyweight class. OCEAN CITY swimmers took part in the Hackney Memorial last Saturday and did pretty well. Neal Leonard was a double winner, taking the 50 freestyle and the 100 free. In the most exiting race of the day, Rob Artie lost the 100 butterfly by just .02 a second. Other teams included Atlantic City, Holy Spirit, Mainland, and Egg Harbor. REMARKS: Why does it seem that

some pro sports should have an all-star game and others shouldn’t? I look forward to the baseball midsummer classic each year and the N.B.A show case usually is very exciting. If you had a chance to see the Pro Bowl and happened to have the only channel in the nation to carry the N.HX all-star game you had to be bored to death. I

better than others when the stars are put together. Hockey and football takes too long to put a game plan together. I have received a lot of mail concerning a comment I made on the records of the local wrestling teams. I won't change what I said, The teams are poor I never said the kids don’t work hard or the coaches don't get home until 10 at

night after putting in many hours, it’s just the win-ioas records are poor. I do know first-hand the situation. I was on one ofthose teams a few years back in school.
