A major goal of Health Watch is to make available, in easily understood terms, the basic concepts of preventive medicine. We each hold many of the keys to our own good health; hopefully we will apply what we know. In order to reach county residents in an even more direct and personal fashion, your American Cancer Society now offers a speakers bureau. Free 20 - 40 minute talks are available to civic, social, and religious organizations for their meetings.
Eight area physicians including myself, three nurses, a nutritionist, environmental planner, health educator, social worker, and four specially trained lay persons are serving as volunteer speakers for this project. Many of the talks are illustrated with slide presentations and all feature a question and answer period where you can ask some of your health questions. We have 13 featured topics. A good idea is to start .with our general presentation on “The Warning Signs of Cancer" add
then schedule future programs chi more specific topics. “Lung Cancer — The Medical Facts”, “Taking Your Bowels Seriously", and "Everything You Need to Know About Prostate and Testicle Cancer” are among the special topics. ESPECIALLY FOR women, we have a session on how to perform the Lifesaving “Breast Self Exam” effectively. A followup wpmen’s session ex-
plains the importance of PAP tests and what they really can show. For motivation, “How i Quit Smoking for Health, Wealth and Taste" is a highly acclaimed onesession program which includes a movie and talk. Another motivational session is “Health and Your Lifestyle”, in which you can anonymously participate in the County Health Department's computer questionnaire which
will give an opinion on bow healthy your lifestyle really is. FINALLY. INview of the fact that almost every family in our community is touched by cancer, we have several special cancer topics. “Understanding Cancer, Therapy” reviews the current state of the art in ,cancer treatment in clear, understandable terms. “Cancer Quackery” pomts up the pitfalls that desperate cancer victims and. loving families may fall prey to despite their good intentions. Your American Cancer
Society has many resources about which it will be helpful to know, so of course, we also offer a brief talk on cur many pro grams and research efforts. From the general to the very specific, the American Cancer Society speakers bureau offers a wonderful opportunity for your social, civic or church organization to fiffer a sure fire program at your next meeting.
