House Probe r s Fri.

ATLANTIC CITY - Congressman William Hughes and his House Crime Subcommittee will conduct a hearing to investigate laundering of drug trafficking and organized crime proceeds through casinos, Friday at 10 a m., in the hearing room of the State Casino Control Commission, 1325 Boardwalk at Tennessee Avenue. •The Treasury Department has identified a halfdozen cases of alleged money laundering through - casinos. We must determine the magnitude of the problem — whether proceeds are, in fact, being laundered and, if so, just how many criminals are laundering how much money through the casinos. Then we will look at loopholes' in the law which make it advantageous to use the casinos. If

loophole* exist, we should close tirem,” Hughes said. “Some drug dealers have so much cash they do not count it, they just weigh it. • They have stacks and stacks of bills in small denominations and there are not many ways to get rid of dollars in bulk. If we find that we can further limit those options through appropriate means, we will encourage the Treasury Department to move forwad with regulations,” Hughes said. He emphasized that the Treasury Department is not suggesting the casinos are implicated in the illegal activity. “We have no reason to' suspect impropriety on the part of the casiiv industry. The issue is th? they are being used as f vehicle for these .crimi-als,” the Chairman said.'.

Chimney On Fire?

By GRAY RUDY Once started, a chintoey fire is unmistakable,'and usually described as a jet airplane taking off . If this occurs in your home, it is recommended that you take the following action. First and foremost, alert all the people in the house and have them leave calmly. Second, call the fire department. And third since most chimney fires are contained within the chimney, there are a few qiflck steps that, if you have any easy exit and are not endangering yourself, you can perform: apse off the stove’s air inlets. Discharge a dry, chemical household fire extinguisher into the stove and up the chimney Use a chimney-type fire extinguisher made specifically for chimney-fires. If your chimney has been properly constructed and well maintained, it can easily withstand a chimney fire. However , if the latter is not true, you could be facing a major house fire. Please help us — and yourself — by keeping your chimney d«an, maintained and inspected regularly. Rudy is fire commissioner/fire inspector of Middle Township District 2.
