Wildwood boy makes good! Hamp Mean, exstar of Wildwood High’s state champion basketeers, , is right hand man for Jerry Buss, owner of the L A. Lakers pro basketeers and. the L A. Kings pro ice hockey team. Mean takes part in the NBA drafts and appears to be a scout among other duties. He’s back East for a Wildwood visit after accompanying Buss to the Meadow lands. Mears donates hefty sums to Wildwood High annually for scholarships. Mean was part of the era w ; hen Wildwood High made sports history with the only three-time South Jersey Group and all-state basket-

ball champs in the 40s.

Mears attracts more than a little attention some Sundays when he takes one of Jerry Buss’ chauffeured can to search out empty cardboard cartons behind posh super markets. He often sends rare wines and other gifts to his life long Crest friends, Mr. and Mn. Jimmy Byrne, so he needs an ample supply of cartons. By the way, Jerry’s chauffeur is a former Playboy bunny, so you can see why the police might be interested in this unlikely caravan. The Byrnes’ son, Tim, has many handsome keepsakes and trophies, sent to him by the Lakers,

The Wildwoods Charles V. Mathis

Sea shellagrams expert Mike (oogan tells us exWest Catholic football great Jim Magee is marking his 27th Cape May county year. He’s a wine tender at Heralds Inn and is ah ex^ Wildwood lifeguard. ONE OF THE Jnost popular local businessman was Howard Konowitch. His widow, Be a, who has devoted her life to children and books, now has the perfect niche — she is the children’s librarian at the county library. Bea is-thrilled that her daughter, Paula Konowitch. has been picked for a tribute as one of the outstanding young women of the U.S.A. for 1983. 'Die publication singles out outstanding professionals. Ms. Konowitch is a Boston denist and is an assistant professor of dentistry at Boston University Bea's son, Ben, is attending Harvard ^chool of Business Administration. Both are Wildwood high graduates. Work crews are busily making emergency railing and platform repairs to the Crest Fishing Pier. After all, the hardier members return to their posts in March. Those who really love fishing were forced to abandon the pier in December. FLORIDA IS fading as the status symbol vacation destination for locals. The prestigious selections are now Mexico and Hawaii. Hawaii never has freezing temperatures. Crest National Lifeguard champ Larry Fee. a TWA airline flight attendant, has spirited his mother. Dot Fee, of Villas Fishing Club fame, off to Hawaii. Ron and Dee Schmidt, culinary and mixologist experts, bask in the sun at Puerto Vallerta. Attorney and Mr£ Charles James opt for Acapulco. Crest apartment owner Ja£k France is winding up the winter vacation seasop with a month in the latest 'in-spot” playground of film stars and the jet set, Cancun, Mexico. France was an all-star athlete at St. Joe’s College in the 30s and Wildwood Beach Patrol South Jersey rowing champion in the 40s. Jack, also a Merchant Marine Academy grad, spent 36 years as operations chief for steamship agents in Philly. Two of his sons have also been Wildwood lifeguards. The exodus of seashore affluent will soon reverse, with many Floridians already announcing their return dates to the Wildwoods to prepare for the 1984 season. Welcome

back!

AMONG THE first to firm up contracts for the upcoming Diamond Beach shopping center are 7/11 convenience stores Center island, the B&B Department store chain of the seaboard, have leased the Ruth and Saul Feld shop. The chain plans a March opening and the operation will be a department store in more than name. One of its stores is in Seaside Heights. The motel association spent thousands in media

ads to brainwash voters with the desirability of charter government for center island. We know, because we attended meetings andwere b : ~ed to write "Some of their news releases. Like Atlantic and Ocean Cities, many voters are having second thoughts. Even though' they were unhappy with the previous commissions, improvements have been negligible since charter bowed in way back last July 1. If councilman really - want to feel the public pulse, we suggest they man Pacific Avenue cash registers for an hour or two to answer the question

beard the most: “Do you have a rest room?’’ COMMUNITY Concerts enlivened many winter nights with famed artists at Wildwood High. Baroness Maria Von Trapp, now 75, brought her famous singing family to the island for one unforgettable qijjht. Her heroic life was portrayed by Julie Andrews in “The Sound of Music.” The Von Trapps’ 1938 flight from Nazi-occupied Austria, inspired “The Sound of Music”. On Dec. 21, 1980, fire leveled the landmark Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, VI., and sent the celebrated family scrambling into the subfreezing flight Air. The new $8 million Trapp Family Lodge opened in Stowe late in 1983. It is the largest cross-country skiing center in the East with 60 miles of trails.
