Festival Puts Bloom on City

CAPE MAY - This Victorian city will be ablopm with tulips in April, and the third annual Tulip Festival will celebrate the colorful flowers which remind the city of its Dutch heritage April 28 and 29. - Over 30,000 tulip bulbs have been planted throughout Cape May in public and private gardens in honor of the Dutch explorer, Captain Cornelius Jackobsen Mey, who bestowed his name on the tip of New Jersey in 1621. To celebrate the Dutch heritage of Cape May and the blooming of the tulip bulbs, the Tulip Festival will be sponsored by the City of Cape May and the Greater Cape May Chamber of Commerce. Most events will be held at the Victorian Rotary Bandstand and Park on Lafayette Street; in the event of rain, the festival will be held in Convention Hall on Beach Drive. TULIP GARDENS throughout the city will blossom with the colorful flowers in April; the City of Cape May has’ planted bulbs along the Washington Street Shopping Mall, at the City Library, in the parks and promenades throughout the city, and at City Hall. Private homeowners and businesses, especially the well-known Victorian bed and breakfast inns and guest houses of Cape May, have a Iso planted thousands of bulbs to add to the color of the spring season in the Victorian village. Special tours of the tulip gardens will be offered during the Tulip Festival l*y the MidAtlantic Center for the

Arts.

Special events and entertainment planned for the Tulip Festival will be held 10a.m. to4p.m., Saturday, April 28. and noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, April 29. The Dutch tradition of straat-

wassen, or street-washing, will be demonstrated during the Tulip FesUval. The old custom, the washing of the streets and steps with brooms and mops, is still observed in the Netherlands. It will be performed in Cape May by children in Dutch costume, led by members of the . Netherlands-American Association of the Delaware Valley. Klompendansing, a traditional folk dance of Holland, will be done by the dance students of the Joanne Reagan School of Dance in Cape May. Klompendanse, which is a social dance like the square dance of this country, is done in wooden shoes, and the dancers wear typical costumes of the Dutch, including elaborate lace

hats.

PRESIDING OVER the Tulip Festival will be a Tulip Queen, to be crowned Saturday, April 28, from among the young girls entering the essay contest sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Tulip gardens throughout greater Cape May will also be judged in a contest and the winners announced during the festival. Special activities planned for the Tulip Festival in- * elude entertainment by the Hoffnagle Band as well as a band concert in the Victorian Rotary Bandstand Park. Several booths will offer Dutch wares, including wooden shoes and souvenirs for sale, sponsored by the NetherlandsAmerican Association of the Delaware Valley. Merchants of Cape May will offer wooden tulip garden ornaments, tulips blooming in pots as well as cut tulips and other flowers and bedding plants for gardens.

Refreshments will also reflect the Dutch theme, from traditional Dutch hot dogs and sauerkraut to Pennsylvania “Dutch" funnel cake. The County Art League will participate in the festival by leading a session called “Tulips in the Park", making tulips in various media: from stencils, tempera paints, paper cutouts, and printing with vegetables, for children. A puppet theater wil also entertain, visitors with Dutch plays such as "Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates, ” and the tale of the little Dutch boy who saved the country by putting his finger in the hole in the dyke. Dutch crafts will be demonstrated by local people, including pottery and basketweaving crafts. €G Art Display CAPE MAY — A mixedmedia exhibit depicting the men and ships of the US Coast Guard will be on display at the Cape Mav County Art League, 1050 Washington St., beginning Sunday. A reception will be held on Monday, Feb. 20, from 7-9 PM.
