Cape Fishing Tourney Winners Announced

COURT HOUSE - Anglers from five states shared prizes in the 48th annual Cape May County Fishing Tournament which closed Dec. 31. Judges in the tournament met to review nearly 2,000 entries in the year-round fishing event — one of the oldest of its kind along the East Coast. In selecting the winners, the judges noted an increase in the numbers of entries in the fluke division and in the shark categories. The fluke increase was attributed to an upswing in the fluke population along the Cape May County coast and in Delaware Bay and the county’s back bays. While sharks are not currently listed in official categories in the contest, divisions for sharks will be included in the 1964 and future contests, according to Freeholder Anthony T. Catanoso. Shark fishing has increased in popularity among recreational anglers and sufficient entries are now being received to warrant establishing shark divisions.

In order to discourage indiscriminate killing of sharks, anglers are being urged to tag and release their sharks unless they are to be mounted as trophies or to be used for food. A special shark release citation, similar to the one issued l5y the county for releasing white and blue marlin will be issued to successful shark anglers who catch and release a shark. THE RARE FISH division honors went to Alexander- Negovora of Vineland, for his 2 lb. 6 oz. Parrotfish. The rare fish, which is more commonly found in tropical waters, was taken from a jetty in Avalon. It was identified and weighed at the Hodge Poge in Avalon by weighmaster John Sprang. Winners in the contest will be notified by mail, their prizes will be sent to them. Contestants who have been awarded prizes will receive fishing reels for their prize-winning efforts. Entries in the contest are recognized with a red contest entry badge. All fish above minimum

Renovated Hall Placed In Service AVALON - Mayor Rachel Sloan and Councilwoman Pauline Petrica cut the ribbon that officially opened the newly renovated Avalon Community Hall. ‘Die mayor noted that five years ago the hall stood almost as a “white elephant" but through the work of Recreation Director Dave Haberle and the recreation committee it is now in constant use. The hall has been made more energy efficient with a new ceiling, floor and lighting. The exterior has been painted and the front entrance carpeted with indoor/outdoor carpeting. The whole room is accented with burnt orange stage and window drapes. The stage curtains were important for making the stage more serviceable for the various groups being -'brought into the borough by th& Performing Arts Commission The recreation committee provides area residents with a full schedule of activities, periodic evenings of dancing and a Tot Shop five mornings a week for pre-schoolers For information on the activities taking place at the hall call
