CREST HAVEN Students in Kim Hilbronner’s class at Ocean Academy are learning about the development of life by incubating chicken eggs. Next month, the seven youngsters will watchchicks hatch from eggs they incubated for three days in the classroom after shipment from a Vineland brooding farm. Last week, the class cracked open eggs which the 10-and 11-year-olds had been carefully brooding since Jan. 26. Chicks were due to hatch last Wednesday but the incubator temperature accidently rose and halted development of the embryos Still, the class had an opportunity to study them and compare their appearance to pictures of egg development. “They’re really active, learning about chickens and development,” explained Cathy Hayes, teaching assistant from Cape May. The project, added Kim Hilbronner of Ocean City, also teaches the students “just how to take care of” the developing eggs. Next month, they’ll learn how to care for chickens instead.
