Prize Awaiting First Winter Flounder Catch

Warmer weather has created an interest in winter flounder fishing. We have had a few calls, and we have also had a few reports on some flounders being caught ui Scotch Bon nett of the little bridge/pier there winter flounders were also reported from a private dock behind Stone Harbor. The reports were’ unconfirmed. buOve were also told that the top fish catches were beini made by one angler who was using a chum pot That's understandable, since

winter flounders will follow a chum slick to its source

seeking food.

To the uninitiated, it must be explained that a winter flounder is a far different f^gh from his summer cousin, the fluke. Winter flounders stay in . the inland waterway until the water temperatures get too uncomfortable. They leave, usually by Mayl, for * the deep waters; oT^hp ocean well offshore. Sum-'' mer flounders/(really fluke) come into the inland waterways about the same time and stay until fall

when the waterways get cold again. At that time the Summer fluke trades places with his winter cousin. SUMMER FLUKE tend to take bigger baits, are much more aggressive and most are caught By anglers who drift or troll slowly while bouncing baits along the bottom. Winter flounders bite best from anchored boats and they are rarely, if ever caught by ocean anglers Best bait for winter flounders is blood’’worm, followed by sand or clam worms, and small bits of clams. The hook size | is small 'df^necessity ! because the small mouthed flatties feed on tiny baits. A No. 8 or No. 10 Chestertown hook l_ preferred. No. 8 or No. 10 Pacific Bass hooks also work well. Since the angler is fishing from an anchored boat, and since the winter flounders tend to run smaller, they are ideal fish to catch from small boats with Very light tackle. Usually, winter flounders are caught on the edges of channels and in the mouths of some of the feeder creeks on both sides of the inland waterway. The better winter flounder anglers have learned to use a chum pot and to stir up the bottom ugder the boat with a plumber’s force cup fastened to the end of a long pole; a garden rake or a wad of chain or sash weights tied to the end of a light rope. YEARS AGO when clammers were active throughout the back bays behind the barrier islands, one of the best places to winter flounder fish was down tide from a working clammer who kept the bottom stirred up while he was working with his clam rakes What we need is more active winter flounder fishermen to find out where the fish are and if in fact the population has increased enough to make the effort worth while. To this end we will make our usual early spring offer. To the first angler who reports a winter flounder to us, we will award a Penn 285 fishing reel. All you have to do to win is to notify us as to when the fish was caught (date rnd time of the day) and where it was caught. To report the fish, write me with the above information at 6 N. Main St., Cape May Court House, 08210, or call me at 465-5121. The fish must be caught in Cape May County waters, and you should have a witness to the catch who will verify

it.

registratic,-) and no entry fee, of course, so all you have to 4p is get out and fish. You might get a double rewarx — a fishing reel for being the first one to. report a fish, and a fine dinner, since winter flounders are excellent to eat even if they do not approach doormat size And, if nothing else, you’ll get a good day of fishing, especially if we keep having mild weather. LING RECIPES: Lots of anglers spurn ling as a table treat, but Capt. Howard Bogan, skipper of the Jamaica out of Brielle, offers a couple of tips on how to enjoy a mess of ling after you catch them. In a recent letter Howard wrote: ‘‘Like ling fried? Italian bread crumbs over ling dipped in egg and cooked for about three minutes makes a treat you can’t beat. Baked? Try this one. First, before frying or baking, ling must be cleaned. Filet them. For baking, melt a substantial amount of butter in a pan. Lay the filets in the melted butter. Mulch or crush some Ritz crackers to a bread crumblike consistency and cover the filets with a generous coating. If you like garlic flavor. Add a little, mixed with the melted butter. Or you can add a little lemon juice. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes in a 350-degree oven. Do this and you will be eating one of the sweetest tasting fish dishes from the ocean,” Says Capt. Bogan. Howard adds as an after thought — For making fish cakes, ling have no equal. Howard is a teriffic boat captain, and he probably is a good cook. My mother had recipes like Howard's. She was great for a handful of this, a dash of that, and a little bit (or a lot) of something. However, whatever she cooked was great and since we all learned from her, most of our recipes are like Howard's. We still think cooking is an art form. Most good cooks are frustrated artists or musicians or something. Anyway, you have Capt. Bogan’s "secret” recipes, which will work with almost any kind of fish, by the way. It is amazing how much flavor can be added KiwanLs Shocked By Gi

to fish with seasoned bread crumbs. WE ALSO LIKE to use Good Seasons Salad Dressing mix. In Capt. Howard’s "recipe” for baked ling we would usw cracker crumbs or bread crumbs, but we would sprinkle a generous amount of Good Seasons Mix over the fish before putting it in the oven. Use the mix dry as it comes out of the envelope It’s pretty potent, so don’t be too “generous" with it. Our idea of “generous” with it. Our diea of "generous” probably would be a half envelope of mix to a fair amount of filets. That’s about what you’d need to feed four people. As is true with all fish, however, how you care for it when it is caught will determine how good it tastes when you sit down at the table. One of the best investments for a fisherman is a good insulted cooler with a drain plug in the bottom so that you can keep your fish iced down but not in ice water, slime and blood. On the way home, it even

pays to take the time to stop one in a while to drain the cooler. Enjoy your fishing, but also enjoy fish on the table by making your catch taste better.

Students Learn of Prison

COURT HOUSE - Students in Miss Kim Hilbrunner's class at Ocean Academy/Alternative School recently made a tour of the Cape May County Correctional Center. The trip was part of their Breaking Out into the Community program. The group hopped into the paddy wagon to begin their tour then were led by Corrections Officer Arthur Treon through the procedures followed to admit an offender. A question and answer session with several inmates highlighted the visit. "WHAT’S IT like to be in prison?” queried Ray Haner. “There is nothing fun about prison. It is'boring, wearisome and worrisome,” replied one prisoner. “I don’t know what kind of life you have out there,” said another, ‘‘but anything is better than this.” The student concluded the tour by viewing the commissary, visiting rooms, and the medical room. Mary Whalper, human services director, set up the tour of the facility.

CAPE MAYj-A vastly improved n+lWiouse "Greenery team handed Kiwanis its first loss of the season 43-40 in Pee Wee Basketball League action this past week.
