Hospital Board Election Tues.
COURT HOUSE - Contributors to Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital will cast their votes next Tuesday for seven hospital governors — unless Superior Court changes the election rules or ballot this week. Friends of Burdette, an organization fielding a slate of 11 candidates against seven incumbent governors, asked Superior Court Assignment Judge Philip A Gruccio last week to delay the election, order the hospital to release a list of the 4,723 contributors eligible to vote, and require the board of governors to fill more of its vacant seats through the ballot box. Gruccio declined to impose a temporary restraining order last week, but •he’s expected to rule again on the Friends' request today. According to Joann Oxley, director of Burdette community relations, the board of governors' bylaws call for “not less U&n 1$, not more than 21 members.' - But Friends members argue that the hospital’s corporate cer-
tificate calls for 25 board members. “RIGHT NOW. there’re 18 (governors) plus two.” Oxley said of the board, noting that the “two” are the presidents of the hospital auxiliary and medical staff. “So. the upcoming vacancies will make it 16 plus the two presidents." she explained Although nine incumbents were scheduled to stand for election this year, Oxley added, two governors decided not to run. thereby creating the two more post-election vacancies. The Rev. Cass Shaw of Lower Township and John Holland of Ocean View bowed out of the election, Oxley noted. That leaves the incumbent slate with Mary Fischer, a retired hairstylist and chairman of the Woodbine Zoning Board; Frank Foster, retired motel owner and a Woodbine planner; William C. Koeneke of North Wildwood, a retired banker; Virginia Way of Wildwood Crest, the hospital foundations assis-
tant treasurer and secretary; Floyd J. Langon, pharmacist and Goshen ranch owner; Dr. Robert Sorenson of Wildwood Crest, chief of medicine and cardiology; and James Tracey, a certified public accountant from Sea Isle City. John A Halbe Jr., president of the Avalon Home and Land Owners' Association,’ is running as an independent. Vernis Pilert of Stine Harbor, a veteran h(»pital volunteer, was standing as a Friends candidate. then as an indepen dent Last week, she withdrew from the governors' race altogether but declined to say why. RUNNING ON THE FRIENDS slate are: Lower Township Committeeman and former Mayor Thomas Clydesdale of Cold Spring, marina owner William Darling of Court House; Dr. Theodore Johnson, superintendent of Middle Township Schools; A. Leo Jordan of North Cape May, former member of the Lower Township Municipal Utilities Authority; Dorothy Mack of Court House, president of the local NAACP chapter; and North Cape May resident, Helene Pasquith.

Also, Judy Smith RN of Villas; Lower Township planner John Wade of North Cape May; the Rev. John P. Ward of Court House, a hospital chaplain; South Seaville resident James M. Rowland; and Dr. Suketu Nanavati of Court House, the cardiologist Burdette governors have twice voted to dismiss.
Their first dismissal vote prompted Friends of Burdette to form in support of Nanavati's legal battle to block his ousting. His case is being heard by Superior Court Judge Marvin N. Rimm in Mays Landing. Rimm has ordered the governors to appear March 5 and explain their motives in voting against Nanavati. Unless Judge Gruccio intervenes, the American Arbitration Association will conduct the governors’ election from 4-10 p.m. Tuesday at the county .VoTech Center on Crest Haven Road, off the northbound Garden State Parkway in Middle Township. Voting will be by six voting machines; voters will be expected to submit proof of their identity.

COURT HOUSE - County Freeholder Director Anthony Catanoso did not file last week as a Republican candidate for reelection, but four GOP officials are vying for two seats on the five-member Board of Choosen Freeholders. Incumbent Freeholder Gerald Thornton of Lower Township notified GOP county chairman Philip A. Matalucci by the Feb. 15 party deadline that he <Thornton) intends to seek party backing next month. Matalucci confirmed. Wildwood Crest Commissioners Frank J McCall and Charles Guhr, former Crest mayor, also seek party support for a freeholder seat‘ along with West Wildwood Mayor Herbert Frederick, the party chairman said. Catanoso, who is vaca tioning in Florida, did not notify Matalucci that he intends to run. By the time his present term expires, Catanoso will have served 20 years on the Republican dominated board and 14 years as its director. He has also served as North Wildwood mayor for 24 years. COUNTY SHERIFF Beech N. Fox put in his bid for renomination but only to reserve his chance for party endorsement, he said. “I’m keeping my political options open.” the incumbent explained. "I would very much like to consider running for state office next year.” If Fox decides to run for higher office, he said he may withdraw from the sheriffs race. That would leave the Republican
nomination race to his administrative secretary Edward Reeves and Ocean City patrolman James Plousis. Reeves, who’s held his present job since August, said he filed as a candidate on the chance that Fox will bow out of the election. So far, county Democrats have not come up with a list of primary contenders. They’re meeting this week, though, said party chairman James lannone, and “we probably will have it in the next few weeks.” Matalucci said the Republican hopefuls will appear at a candidates' night in March. The GOP executive committee will decide which contenders to back later next month.
