With the CAL II title on the line, the Hermits did all they could to hold down the league's leading scorer. Mike Schafer, and beat the Warriors in the process. 6&-66 ScHafer did score 16 ipoints jto back 24 from Senior Bill Osborn. Osborn Was .instrumental in a big 26 {jgjnt thirdquarter and XtVo-point lead St. Augustine, however, scored eight unanswered points near the close of the contest to pull out the victory Swingman Dave Orlandini topped the Hermits with 26 points During the regular season, the two teams split _their two games, both close ind pretty physical affairs. ed just 12 of 25, less than 50 per cent THE PLAYOFF GAME mafked the second straight season the Hermits bad to win a one-game playoff to capture the flag It was another Cape May County school that fell last year — Ocean City, since removed to CAL I. On the way to the playoff, Wildwood' had to down archrival Wildwood Catholfc at Convention Hall. Wildwood won the game 70-37, but something looked wrong to the average fan. Catholic coach Fran St. John employed a diamond and one defense in an effort to stop high scoring Bill Osborn The diamond part of the defense is supposed ' to cover zone areas but instead St jJbhn had them cover Wildwood center Mike Schafer. From the stands it looked as if Wildwood Catholit had no intention of winning, just stopping Schafer and Osborn. Okay, they stopped Schafer (one point), but were out of the game from the opening minutes. I spoke to a lot of very- disappointed fans following the blow-out. Homer Baker is now the all time leading scorer for Ocean City high school. Against PennsaukerrTech last week, Baker scored 17 to run his total to 1,341, passing the old standard set by Bill Fischer. O.C. won the contest 84-50 with Gene Watts leading all scorers with 24 points. The record- setting game was the 100th of Baker's fine career. ELSEWHERE. MID-
DLE Township closed out their league schedule with a 78-66 win over Hammomton. Larry Fields led five players in double figures with 18 points. Someone used to double figure scoring has to be Mary Gavin of Wildwood Catholic. Last week the Crusaders ran its record to 21 and 2 with a 60-41 win over Wildwood with Gavin scoring 28 points. Audra Coleman, Wildwood's top scorer, was held to just 14 by the swarming Crusader defense. Mammon ton offered no defense against Shelly Ridgeway and Jennifer Snyder as those two led Middle Township to a 75-45 victory . Ridgeway nailed down 20 of her 29 points before the half. Snyder ended up with 23. Sue Becker scored 14 points to lead Ocean City to an easy 73-17 win over Pleasantville. The Red Raiders bolted for 32 second-quarter points on the way to the win. Trish Levin chipped in 13 and Judy Eckerson added 10 for the winners.
ST. AUGUSTINE added anothfr title to the trophycase. winning the District 32 wrestling event. The Hermits edged Lower Cape May *7^-83. Lower's first champion was John Porter at 148 pound- Pcrter upped his record to 24-0 this year with a 10-3 decision over Dave Reddir^g of Ocean City. Porter took control in the second period, 6-1, after a scoreless first stanza. Top-seeded Sean Bren-
Dekelco Comes Out Ahead of Eckel’s
CAPE MAY — Two evenly matched teams went up against each other in men’s recreational volleyball as Dekelco battled Eckel’s Diesel. In the first game. Eckel's 'held the lead throughout the contest as Dekelco was plagued with inconsistent serving. Eckel ’$ went on to win easily 15-9. Game two was much closer as Eckel's took an early 9-5 lead only to see it evaporate quickly as Dekelco put its offense

together and gained the lead 12-9. Tom Eckd put Eckel’s right back in the game with three straight points on pin-point serving to tie things up at 12 a piece ECKEL’S THEN lost serve and Dekelco won the game 15-12 behind the spiking of Dave Matagese. Dekeko ran away with the rubber game 15-3 as Eckel's offense completelycollapsed. Second-place Keen's Plumbing and Heating took on the Wrecking Crew the second match of night Keen’s compk dominated the Wrec Crew in game one as Kowalski's fine, all-around play lead Keen's to the victory at 15-7. Game two was much the same as game one as the Wrecking Crew could never quite get on track despite the aggressive play of Greg Orsimarsi and Keen's won again 15-9. The Wrecking Crew finally got things together in the final game as it took an early 9-4 lead and rallied to win the game 15-9 after Keen's had tied it at 9-9. In the final match of the evening, Breakwater Electric showed the League that it is the "cream of the crop” as it swept Keen's Plumbing and Heating 15-7, 15-10 and 15-19.
nan made it two in a row for the Capers as he won a 17-0 match at 158. Brennan also used the second period to his advantage, taking an 8-0 lead before coasting to the superior decision. At 170, Eric Simonsen, only a freshman, had to take second place because he couldn’t wrestle in the final following a shoulder injury. In the heavyweight tilt, two Cape May County wrestlers squared off with the title going to Trip Snyder of Ocean City. Snyder ran up a lead early, then finally pinned Lower's, Bill Kane at 3:09. Ocean City’s Kevin Clarke lost a tough match v at 141 pounds. Clarke lost to v Bob Furca 4-3, with Furca revenging his only loss o'f the year In a duel meet during the season, Garke downed the Oakcrest champ, 7 to 5. REMARKS: Philadelphia Flyer Paul Holmgren was released by the club and sent to Minnesota. I don't understand how such decisions are made, but I always thought that Holmgren was one of the few players on the Flyers who gave 100 per
cent all the time. Hohngren learned of the trade through the press and not from the front office. No class at all. The kid the Flyers got in return may be in college for a couple more years So no return on the loss of the veteran in the near future. For the first time in a number of years the Philadelphia 76ers lost four games in a row last week. It seems that they lack that ability to put teams away down the stretch like they did last year. Maybe Moses Malone isn’t fully recovered from the ankle injury that started the slide. Hopefully the entire squad will be ready when the playoffs start. Didn't the Los,Angeles Lakers look impressive on Sun- . day? Not too many clubs beat the Boston Celtics and the Sixers back to back. The U.S.F.L. got started last week and some big name players made debuts. Brian Sipe lead the New Jersey Generals to a win over Birmingham. Sipe has to make Hershel Walker a better running back, taking pressure off the former Heisman winner.
