Seeing Eye Seeks Home for Puppies

COURT HOUSE - Faced with difficulty in finding homes for first year care of puppies destined to become helpers for the blind. Seeing Eye Inc. and the County 4-H will hold an open house March 22 for anyone interested in raising such session will be 7:30 p.m. at the Cooperative Extension Center, Rte. 657, Dennisville Road. Mrs. Lorraine Hudson, local Seeing Eye representative, and Robert L. Dilks, 4-H program associate, will be available to answer questions and fill out applications. A Seeing Eye puppy will be present and a film will be shown. SEEING EYE furnishes the dogs, the instructors and the training that brings freedom _ of mobility to blind people. 4-H provides homes for the Seeing Eye puppies during the critical first year of their lives. Recently, 4-H has been running into problems in holding up its share of the obligation. Subtle changes in family living are causing the supply of suitable homes to dwindle. Only 190 puppies are in 4-H homes at the present time, although Seeing Eye is trying to build up a population of 300 dogs annually. Since 4-H is the only source of first year home training, the problem is critical. In addition to working mothers, corporate transfers and changing family life styles also contribute to the declining number of homes. The 4-H program, finally only in Northern i Central New Jersey,

For School Candidates

COURT HOUSE - An orientation program for candidates for local school boards will be conducted 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 12, at the Vo/Tech Center, sponsored by the county School Boards Association. The session, along with others in the state, is designed to help candidates become better informed about the responsibilities of board of education membership and the issues facing public schools.

For Music In Schools

COURT HOUSE - In observance of Music in Our Schools Week March 4-10, Middle Township Elementary School 3 invites parents to visit their children’s general music class, instrumental music lesson, choir or band rehearsal. Instrumental . music students have contributed to a career education bulletin board by the main entrance. The music department is also sponsoring a poster contest, with winning posters to be displayed on the education board in the front hallway. Lesley Weber is director of instrumental music, and Lois Likens of vocal music.

or golden retrievers are also used, but to a lesser extent. When the puppies are about eight weeks old, they are put into a 4-H home where they remain for about a year. After that time they are returned to Seeing Eye for three month’s intensive training with a professional dog trainer.
