Wetlands to Give Award to Student

die Township High School Science Fair Friday. The new “Wetlands Institute Science Fair Award" will be presented at 6:30 p.m. at

excellence will include a cash prize, student membership in the Wetlands Institute, and inscription of the winner’s name on an award plaque * for permanent display at the high school. Wetlands Institute Board Chairman Roger A. Wood of Avalon will present the award at 6:30 p.m. Friday along with Assistant Director Anne Galli. Dr. Wood, a professor of zoology at Stockton State University, explains, ‘This award is being initiated to increase awareness and interest in local and regional environments, conservation and natural history.” THE INSTITUTE, located on 35 acres of salt marsh just outside Stone Harbor, houses a Wetlandia museum, research laboratories, an observation tower, science bookshop and a marsh view lecture hall. The cedar shake building and a salt marsh trail are open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays in season but are open 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday until June. The private facility is supported by donations, grants and membership fees. Types of projects eligible for the 1984 award will be natural history (birds, insects, reptiles, fish, etc.),
conservation of living natural resources (animals and/or plants) such as ehdangered species or local/regionai environmental problems and concerns, and coastal environments (geology, physical processes such as soil or beach erosion, dune protection). The winner’s project will be judged for appropriateness of topic; demonstration of understanding of scientific method; clear, informative and attractive presentation of topic; logical solutions, recommendations and/or identification of further work needed The Wetlands Institute award is the only cash prize for entrants but other categories of science will receive recognition and winners may compete in the South Jersey Regional Science Fair at Stockton State CoUege.

WOODBINE - A Polish smorgasbord will be held 1-6 p.m. Sunday, March 18, the Feast of St. Casimir, at St. Casimir’s Church hall, 304 Clay St. Tickets will be available at the door. Mass will be celebrated at noon.

A veteran of 18 years in postal service, she comes to shore from Reading, Pa., where she was superintendent of support services.
