[VINELAND - The Boy Scouts of America has a project to help children be more self reliant. The project, sponsored by the Lower Township Kiwanis Club, is now being used in the third grades of all public and private schools in the township. Peter Hausman, District Executive of the Baysea District, Boy Scouts of America, says the project is built around an activity book called Prepared For Today. The booklet helps b#ys and girls learn how to fix meals, handle small

emergencies, take care of younger children, and what to do if he or she encounters a stranger at the front door -or on the street. Hausman says the book is used by all the students,. not just Scouts Scouting has introduced the project in .response to changing family life-styles, Hausman says. Increasing numbers of single-parent and working-parent households mean that more children will be left at home alone, he says. The book is designed so a child goes through it with a parent or other adult.
