EVERYDAY FOLKS love the Jersey Cape, but so do those who can afford homes in the million $ bracket. Anglesea Liquor Store owner Bill Bergey. ex-Etogles star, has .just mewed into his new home in Atfalon This mighty man shoulders a “Sailfish” craft single handedly and carries if to the surf. U.S Sen Bill Bradley seeking an Avalon manse knows it’s a small world. His salesman. Bill Soens. used to play basketball against him at Princeton^ Welcome, senator, as a Jersey Cape native and please send us some of those bridges we need so bad Ron Japorski has just moved into his lavish new "digs." The lovely lady who owns Poplar Cafe hereabouts enjoys seeing Ron jog by her home Although he doesn't own a Cape home, 76ers Coach Bill Cunningham rents an Avalon cottage for six weeks anhually and loves to frolic with Iris three daughers on the beach. Flyers star Rick MacLeisch reluctantly sold his Avalon Lagoons house when he was reassigned to . Canada. Scads of prominent bankers also dote on those oceanfront homes that sell for a million upwards. The Phillies have relinquished ownership of the Avalon manse where some of their stars spent vacations. Gary Maddoxx was there whenever free. Mike Schmidt spent two summers in Avalon but had tp find a security guarded woodsy retreat due to the fan groupies who made his home life a nightmare. • Bernie Parent had the same problem in Wildwood ?nd had to hire two billy club wielding Amazon guards to guard his property, wife, kids and sdnity. Parent still berths his yacht in the area and is on the Flyers coaching staff. , Parent was forced to sell his home near the County *Toost when sightseers and ^ports-groupies made life unbearable. Anchor Inn's Bob Zuzulock's kids were fast friends with the Canadian stars' kids. The realtors to the sports star jocks in Avalon are Soens & Moore Realty and affiliated Avalon Realty. All the Soens freres are skyscraper tall and can identify with the jocks as they were all star college basketeers themselves. One son. Dennis, is a ( Broadway star where he has appeared in such shows as “On. Calcutta." Roger Soens is a prominent Philly . lawyer. Many prominent bankers own Avalon homes, as does the editor of thje prestigious Busines ■Week magazine. The show biz colony has declined since Ed. MacMahon was forced west due to his TV assignemnts.
News Notes from-
The Wildwoods Charles V. Mathis
Cresse and Park Boulevard laundermat and is an exmotel owner. Area Seven/Eleven owners felt important indeed at a Vegas conclave when Wayne Newton serenaded them with “all Night Long!" Wildwood officer Jon Winsett tells us the 7/Eleven steak hoagies are as good as the world famous South Philly ones at “Mister D's " summertimes If all local youth hustled like the D’.+ntonio freres, this would be some island! Festival Travel and Tours is one of their upcoming enterprises. The Ultra-modem office is opposite Crest Tavern. Sad to see that the Dibonato brothers abandoned construction of a huge new motel next to the Coast Guard base and Diamond Beach. Did the promoters have cash flow problems or was it environmental objections? However, other phases of the huge Ciampetti tract projects are on schedule with many condos and new streets completed. EVER SINCE they hit the island, exPennsylvania Senator and Mrs. Bob Gerhart, of Reading, have been seaboard pace setters. But they'll be topping themselves as Don Twist contractors rush completion of a quarter million dollar face lifting of the
3,100-seat Playpen night club. A little sea gull tells us that the decor is so posh and opulent that the club, aimed at the over-21 crowd, will be talked about around the globe. Bravo! The island, a stronghold of native and visiting Irishmen, will be jumping St. Paddy's Day weekend. The Grand Hotel has all 184 units reserved for a gigan.,tic four-day St. Paddy’s day at the shore celebration. We won’t have any Fifth Avenue parade but King Neptune has promised to drench the mermaid's hair with green sea water.
As Convention Hall director. Mayor Earl Ostrander and Tom Parsons helped bring the biggest new invasion of conclaves since we w ejrk Holly Beach. Ostrander also attracted free national TV' coverage when he lured Sugar Ray Leonard here for a week of tdevised bouts. But it isn’t only the "old man” who's a go-getter. His Honor's two sons are serving Uncle Sa-m with fervor and finesse. Buddy •Stretch’' Ostrander and his wife, Patty, are rounding out a four-year, tour of duty in Rhine Germany in the Security Division. “Stretch” is also a star hasketeer with the Air Force.
