With spring only a few sveeks away most homeowners are anxious to , get started on outside lawn And grounds care. , Take advantage of a nice March day by raking leaves, debris, etc., which have accumulated on lawn areas: March is an ideal time to ^practice what is called dor'manf seeding. Very simptly, one would rake thin areas and bare spots in the lawn. These areas may be seeded making sure that the seed comes in contact ;i with the soil. '' The seed will not germinate immediately but will remain dormant until early to mid-April when favorable soil temperatures are conducive to seed germination. Getting an early jump ; on seeding provides maxi imum time during the spr- ‘ ing months for the young : seedlings to grow and mature prior to the heat of I the summer. For lawns having a ' history of carbgrass problems the last week of - March would be an ideal time to treat for crabgrass I control. Apply Lofts Preemergence Crabgrass Killer with Balan or Lofts Two-In-One with Balan (25-3-3 fertilizer in combination with Balan) at this time. It is advisable to re- . mind homeowners that to control crabgrass it is important to apply pre4 emergence herbicide prior to the germination of crabgrass. Balan should be utilized to control crabgrass only on areas which have not be recently reseeded. If Balan is used in conjunction with seeding, the desirable turfgrtiss -seeds will not germinate. If one intends on seeding and controlling crabgrass at the same time. Lofts Pre-emergence Crabgrass Killer with

Tupersan should be utilized. This controls crabgrass and allows you to seed at the same time. Tupersan has a relatively short residual period. For season-long control it is important to apply a second application six to eight weeks after the mitial treatment. Last year’s crabgrass infested lawns produced crabgrass seeds which were deposited to the soil surface late last fall. Those ■ seeds remain dormant over the winter months and are now ready to germinate as soon as the soil temperatures rise to ap-

proximately 55° - 60°. Depending on location and sol type, this occurs usually between mid to late April. Once crabgrass germinates and grows beyond the two or three leaf stage, confrol become extremely difficult. This is why one must apply Pre-emergence Crabgrass Herbicides prior to mid-April. With areas having a history of severe crabgrass problems, it is advisable to recommend a follow-up application in early June which will provide season long control of crabgrass.
