Vegetable gardeners often ask when should start their transplants to have them ready when planting time arrives . According to Larry Newbold, County Agricultural Agent, the answer depends on what kinds of vegetable plants, now they will be grown, and when they are to be set out in the garden. Cooperative Extension vegetable specialists at Rutgers University’s Cook College, when growing tomat,o plants for variety trials, allow five to seven weeks, while for peppers and eggplants they allow eight to ten weeks. If the seed is sown in a pot or other growing container from which it will not be transplanted to a second container before setting out, less time is needed than if the seedlings' jut transplanted. Under ideal growing conditions. a container-grown tomato plant that is not transplanted wiUJie ready for the garden (ml five or five and a half weeks. Transplanting will add a week or ten days to the

totaj time. A transplanted seedling takes longer because its growth is checked when the root system is unavoidable damaged during transplanting t'' another container. The temperature during the time the seeds are sprouting should be five to ten degrees warmer than afterwards. Also, the growing temperatures should be lower for the cool season vegetables, such as lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and onions, -than for the warm season kinds, such as tomato, peppers and eggplant. The minimum night temperature is important. For tomatoes and pepper, the night temperature should be no lower than 60 to 65 degrees F. For eggplants it should be 65 to 70 degrees F. To grow good plants it is very important to have enough light. In the home, if artificial lights are used, plants will develop - nice stocky growth. Jn the absence of such lights, the plants should be grown by a window with a southern exposure. Plants will be tall and spindly if grown without enough light or if the temperature is too high. Proper watering will also keep plants growing on schedule. The soil should be kept just slightly moist. Daily watering is not necessary except when the weather is very sunny and the soil dries out. Over,wa*ering can result in conditions favoring disease, especially one called damping- off, which can be fatal to the plants. For more information on growing your own
