What to Window

By Gepe Rupinski Almost daily the questions are asked. “Why do my windows sweat?” and “What can I do about it?" The first question is easy — moisture vapor — present in the air of all homes, is the culprit. When the warm moist air comes into contact with a cooler surface the moisture vapor returns to a liquid state in the form of water on the cooler surface. In order to understand this better we should understand the term "relative humidity". When air will hold no more moisture, it is said to be saturated. The percentage of moisture in the air in relation to complete saturation is the relative humidity. The sources of moisture found in the air of most homes are the many and varied activities of dailv living: making coffee, boiling water, taking a bath or shower or watering the .plants, to name a few. . Sometimes these activities j>ut more moisture into the air thar is desirable and it must escape to the outside. Durinc the -winter the outside '■ftlative humidity is comparatively low, Wnen an excessively high inside humidity* is created, a vapor pressure is caused and it w ill tend to equalize. the same* as of leaky bucket. IF THE PROBLEM is severe, it can even cause the paint to peel on the siding, just as a balloon filled with too much water will burst , In order to avoid excessive condensation, the National Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association recommends the following humidity levels be maintained: Outside Air Temp Recommended Humidity 0° or below not more then 20% 0 to 20 above not more than 30% 20‘and oyer not more than 40%, To check on this level in our home a simple umidity gauge or hygrothermometer may be obtained at your locafhardware store. If your prime windows are steaming or sweating — the installation of storm windows will usually help • by allowing the inside window to maintain a temperature compatible with the inside air temperature of the room* If the storm windows sweat — check the humidity level of the room, and reduce it to the approximate level; in most cases this will solve the problem. If it does not, check the "breathing holes" at the bottom of the storm window. If they are plugged, unplug them so the moist air can escape.

TO REDUCE excessive humidity in a home the following suggestions are made: While cooking, use exhaust fan or close kitchen door and open a window slightly. Laundry room door should be closed and a window open while doiag laundry Bathroom door should be closed and window opened after a hot shower. Do not place pans of water on kerosene heaters. Large numbers'of plants should be concentrated in a sun room or other seldom used room during cold weather. The entire house should be briefly ventilated once a day to allow humid air to escape and drier air to enter. These steps should help you maintain a more comfortable and healthy home. Condensation between the glass of dual-pane or ' 'thermopane" glass windows is caused by a breakdown of the sealant used. These windows are manufactured as a sealed unit and cannot be repaired, they must be replaced. Most manufacturers offer a warranty on replacement of defective units. This warranty can vary in duration from one to 10 years.
