if Roofs Over the HillTime for Replacement
If you haven’t taken a look at your roof lately, now might be a good time to do so. Every roof has to be replaced eventually. If it is old and worn-out, a patch job simply won’t do because roofs tend to wear uniformly and even the best eventually wear out because of weathering. Climatic variations, the sun; wind, rain and snowall take their toll. Some signs of a badly-weathered roof include cracked, curled or missing shingles. The best way io discover if your roof needs replacing is to determine its age. A roof of standard shingles installed mbre than 15 years ago, probably needs to be reroofed. An on-the-roof inspection by a professional roofing contractor is best. For a homeowner, it's better and safer to inspect the roof from the ground, using field glasses if pecessary for a close-up view* Getting on the roof to look it over can be dangerous .and cause damage to shingles. There are many roofing materials from which to choose, but asphalt shingles, both organic and fiber-glass-based, are the most widely used in both new home construction and reroofing. For flat or nearly flat surfaces, built-up roofing may be the best choice. A new generation of multi-layered asphalt shingles designed to last up to 25 years or more is especially attractive on homes of distinction.
Shingles with a fiber glass-base are growing fast in popularity and offer excellent durability plus Class A fire protection. Available in popular earthtone shades of brown and beige which serve to blend or contrast with other color elements in a home, threedimensional asphalt shingles create dramatic, bold shadowlines that lend prestige to the best of homes. Remember that the cost of labor for application is usually the same, regardless of the life expectancy of the roof. To estimate the annual cost of a new roof, add the cost of labor and materials Then,
divide the total by the desigft4ife of the shingle It jrfav turn out that the costlier shingle is more economical because the cost of labor and materials is amoritized over a longer period of time.

Pepper Seed From Rutqers Oritani' sweet bell pepper seed will again be made available to home gardeners from Cook College of Rutgers University. County Agricultural Agent Larry Newbold announced.. Released in 1976 by Dr. G.D. Lewis. Professor at Rutgers University’s Cook College, 'Oritani' has become a favorite with many home gardeners not only in New Jersey but in many other states including California and Texas. Every year well over a thousand requests are received. Resistant to tabacco mosaic virus, the pepper's continuing popularity is due W the superior eating quality of its fruit. Green or red ripe. ‘Oritani’ is especially sweet without the bitter flavor common to many other varieties. This versatile variety is superb for salads, stuffing or roasting. The blocky fruits have very thick flesh and develop a dark red col^ or when fully ripe. \ Pepper seed should bd' planted indoors in a warm location in mid to late March and transplanted to the garden in late May or very early June. Peppers need a place in the garden that has sun for most if not all of the day. Rutgers is the only source of Oritani' seed. To obtain a packet with planting directions send a stamped, self-addressed /envelope and $1.00 to Dr. G.D. Lewis. Dept, of Plant Pathology, P.O. Box 231. New Brunswick. NJ 08903.
