Wildwood Makes It To State Finals; Lose

Wildwood Catholic girls know a good thing when they see it and against St. Peter’s last week the inside game was the good thing. Over and over the Crusaders passed the ball to center Jackie Cowan'and she responded with a teamHigh 20 points as Wildwood /Catholic captured the 'South Jersey Parochial B itle with a 51-48 victory. (They lost the state Inerscholastic Athletic , isociation title 59-46 in a : Unday game against St. Boat Guide \. . Is Available

Anthony’s of Jersey City in South Orange). The Crusaders usually have things their own way from the foul line. Against St. Peter’s, missed free throws almost cost them a chance at the state final. On the evening, Wildwood Catholic hit only nine of 17, but when they counted, the seasoned veterans calmly ' hit four of five down the stretch to seal the victory. Trailing 24 to 23 at the half, W.C. seemed to reach back for a little extra in the third period to pull away briefly. Senior Kelly Caruso hit on two baseline jumpers and all-state k guard Mary Gavin canned 'o long range shots as the iusaders built up a 36-34 advantage after three INTHEFG'RTH PERIOD, Catholic built up a nine-point lead only to miss the front end of two 1-and-l foul situations. Holding a one-point lead at 46-45, Gavin converted two from the charity stripe and Cowan later hit on two foul shots for a 51-47 lead and held on for the South Jersey Championship. Gavin controlled the pace of the game, dribbling though the tough Cardinal defense to finish with 17 points. The good thing against St. Peters proved to be Gavin and Cowan and following the pre-game plan, Wildwood Catholic came away with the impressive win. One team that wasn’t as fortunate was the girls from Ocean City. O.C. had

a semifinal date with Central and lost 45-32. Turnovers throughout the game did the Red Raiders in, 24 in all. In the first half, Central didn’t take advantage of the Raider miscues but the second half they started to hit their shots and pull awav. After 16 minutes the teams were deadlocked at 19 following an early 10-3 lead by the Eagles. Central went to a half court press that Ocean City handled for most of the third stanza to trail by three after three quarters. That was as close as they would get. THE RAIDERS WENT as cold as the weather to start the fourth period failing to score in the first four

minutes. At that point Central held a 36-27 lead and v held on for a birth in the South Jersey Group. III title game With only two seniors on the Ocean City squad this season, they made great strides for a team that finished with a 14 and 12 record. Experience will come to the Red Raidersand another good season should follow next year. All season^ long they were never a team that you could count out. The long and tough wrestling season came to an end for two standout county wrestlers last week. Lower Cape May’s John Porter and Bill Kane both lost in the first/ round of state compe||tion at Princeton University. Porter, wrestling in the 148 pound weight class, was pinned by Cliffside Park’s Bill Blume at 3:50. Porter had an undefeated record for the Capers during the regular season and finished second in the Region 8 tournament. Another silver medalist in Region 8 competition, Bill Kane, also lost in round one. Kane is a sophomore at Lower and will be back next year battling for another chance at the heavyweight championship. Pemberton’s Bitt Hiros pinned Kane at 1:48 of their heavyweight tilt. Remarks Just when y’ouy thought tha* we had enough professional sports another one

comes along. The Women’s National Basketball Association is planning to return with a 22 game schedule. This time it wil try a U.S.F.L. strategy and play after the men are done 'so as not to compete with the manv winter sports. Speaking of the U.S.F.L., how about the contract the L.A. Express gave to Steve Young? Forty million over forty-three years? They keep telling us that they will keep their salaries within reason. I wonder First Place Cage Tie

CAPE MAY - Kiwanis moved into a first place tie as it narrowly defeated Hillhouse Greenery 37-36 in Pee Wee Basketball. Scou Holden and Mike Cheiius did all the scoring for Kiwanis as they scored 20 and 17 points respectively. Hillhouse’s Tom Reid led al scorers with 23 points.

Model. Cleaners moved into a second-placed tie as it destroyed Casale's 47-28 behind Gary Frazier’s 19 points and Joey Norris' 13 points. what out of reason would be. Can't stop talking about the Philadelphia Phillies. I hope that Tug McGRaw is traded to a team that really needs him. With Al Holland around and also a left hander. Tug will not get much work with the Phillies. McGraw says he still can pitch and I beliCve him. The forced holiday for Flyers', captain Bobby Clarke is the dumbest move yet for G.M, Bob McCammon So let the Flyers lose with Clarke in Florida Doesn't make sense.
