COURT HOUSE-There will be no state Department of Agriculture gypsy moth spraying in Cape May County this year, according to Larry Newbold, county agricultural agent. State inspectors recommended 340 acres in Dennis Township, 100 acres in Woodbine Borough, and 45 acres in Middle Township. A 50-acre minimum removed Middle Township from the list and representatives from Dennis Township and Woodbine were not present at the Feb. 21 meeting at Buena Vista Township — thus removing them from the State Gypsy Moth Spray Program (or 1984. Newbold said that townships can still conduct their own spray programs without the state or Federal cost sharing program. John Kegg, state entomologist, attributes the lowered gypsy moth Dooulations in Cane Mav County to the high oak tree mortality and the fact that

some townships have their own spray programs. Kegg mentioned that the Northwest corner of Cape May County (around the Belieplain area) was hit very hard in 1983. The state spray program is expected to cover about 44,000 acres in 1984. Much of the acreage is centered in Burlington, Camden, and Atlantic Counties, with Cumberland County heading the list with 9,300 acres. State spraying in the Belieplain State Forest is still in question despite the fact that some areas have over 50 percent tree mortality. According to Kegg, this decision will depend on state budget appropriations. Spray recommendation leaflets on gypsy moth control are still available to homeowners. TYiey can be obtained free from Newbold at the Cape May County Extension Service office (465-5115.)
