COURT HOUSE — Mackerel are on their way and should be within the reach of Cape May County ocean anglers in a matter of days. Mackerel are a traditional Jersey Cape Salt Water Fishing Season’s opener for party and private boats based in Cape May, the Wildwoods, Stone Harbor, Avalon, and Sea Isle City. They usually show up within striking distance of Cape May County ports somewhere around the first week of
Apql.
Anxious anglers should keep in constant touch with their party boat, marina or tackle shop operators to get an up-to-the-minute update on the arrival of the mackerel. Party boats have already scheduled weekend runs to the offshore wrecks in search for cod and pollock and will continue to do so until the mackerel arrive. At that time, most will leave wreck fishing to pursue mackerel. FOR GENERATIONS, mackerel in Jersey Cape waters have excited the imaginations and the adventuresomt spirit of local residents and visitors. Originally, mackerel were pursued by fleets of sailing vessels which would follow the fish up the coast in the spring and back down again in the fall and winter. When the mackerel were within easy' sailing from Cape May-Wildwood docks, the commercial boats would literally nil Cape
May Harbor with their picturesque vessels and sails. Many hogsheads of mackerel made their wfcy to markets all over the country from the commer-
cial docks.
Today the arrival of mackerel still excites the commercial fleet, which * can and does find a market for its catch. However, thousands of individual anglers eagerly await the news that mackerel have arrived, using the mackerel as the first

liberal dose of fishing fun designed to cure a wintertime affliction known as “cabin fever.” Since mackerel can and usually are caught in large numbers, anglers should make early provisions to process their catch on return home. A key to good mackerel recipes is to keep the fish fresh from the moment they are caught. This is best accomplished by putting the fish into containers which have a drain to allow water to run out. MACKEREL SHOULD be cleaned as soon as possible on return to port and the filets or cleaned fish should be bagged in watertight containers and iced down. * ' Since mackerel do not freeze well for use later on the table, anglers should
