The Rolling Stones’ latest. Undercover (Rolling Stones), should prove to their critics that just because the members have reached middle-age they aren’t going to play it safe by taming down their music. Undercover has to rank as one of the strongest albums by the post-Brian Tones Stones. Like their most recent efforts, this has a clear, urban R&B feel to the rhythm section, giving the stinging twin guitars of Keith Richards and Ron Wood firm support. Mick dagger’s vocals are as confident as ever, makTing each track a joy to listen to. Undercover can be bluesy, simple three chord rock, or slick R&B. but throughout it runs the violent, frenzied, aggressive edge that has always given The Rolling Stones vitality. Old men? The Rolling Stones are just hitting their stride. Mike Bloomfield was probably the greatest w-hite blues guitarist who ever lived. In his relatively short life he inspired thousands of musicians, made some excellent records, and brought to the spotlight the work of the blacks who taught him how to play. 'Bloomfield (Columbia) is a must-have two-record compilation that shows how gifted he was as a musician. This isn’t a perfect collection — it leaves out most of his ground-breaking work with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band — but one does hear his magic through solo tracks, cuts with The Electric Flag, Al Kooper, and one dynamite live cut, •Born In Chicago”, from his tenure . with Butterfield. Bloomfield always seemed to be scared of mass adulation, which is why he never became a household name, but as a guitarist Mike Bloomfield was an innovator and as a musician he had soul. The all-female, British heavy metal band Girlschool have returned to our shores with another strong outing. Play Dirty (Mercury) might have a slightly more sophisticated sound in the production, but this band still rocks hard and fast. No major changes, as Girlschool’s sound is based on a pumped up rhythm section, taut guitar breaks and urgent vocals. I really think if people will forget their prejudices toward female rock and rollers that Girlschool will find an audience on the American heavy metal circuit. They deserve it.
