Everything You Want To Know and All That
The baseball season is just a week away and before long, much conversation will (enter on baseball trivia and the Philadelphia Phillies. A lot of bar room chatter turns into a session on who knows more about baseball than the next guy. Here are
some facts on the Phillies and other baseball trivia you can use not to fall too far behind. The Phils open their season next Tuesday on the road against the Atlaqta Braves and the home opener comes April 10 against the Houston Astros.
Last season the Phils finished 90-72, the best since 1980 and the fourth best in the club’s history. The Phils had two major streaks .during the 1983 season They won 11 games in a row at one point, the longest in the Majors, and went scoreless at one stage for 42 innings, also the longest in the big leagues. In post-season play last season the Phillies downed the Los Angeles Dodgers three games to one then lost the World Series to the Baltimore Orioles four games to one. Gary Matthews was named . Most Valuable Player in the Leauge Championship Series even though Mike Schmidt had a higher batting average. Now some other facts about the Philadelphia team. THE PHILS HOLD the record for most National League doubleheaders for one season, playing 43 in 1943. Lefty O'Doul set two National League records during the 1929 season, reaching first 334 times and collecting 254 hits. JIM KONSTANTY won the most games for the Phils in a relief role, 16 during the 1950 season. Ron Reed picked up 13 fireman wins in 1979. Steve Carlton has struck out 759 different batters in his major league career. Carlton also holds several other records, including strikeouts against the Phillies. With the St. Louis Cardinals, Carlton fanned 16 batters in a nineinning game against the Phils. Carlton holds the big league record for Cy Young Award wins with four. Jim Palmer, Sandy Kofax andTom Seaver each won three. Left has never pitched a no-hitter in his career but holds the N.L. record with six one-hitters. Bob Feller had 12 one-hit games in the American League. Last season Carlton joined the 300 win club with a 6-2 victory against St. Louis and Joaquin Andojar. MOVING TO THE hitters now, last season marked a

high and low for many Phillies' players. The Phils had their biggest hitting output against the Cincinnati Reds with 20, but gave up 19 hits on two separate dates. The day the Phils collected 20 base knocks was also the day they came up with nine runs, the most for one nine-inning game. Individually, Bob Dernier had the most hits in one game with five against Atlanta, later to be tied by catcher Bo Dial, who claimed five against Chicago in late September. In home run output, Mike Schmidt had five twohomer games last year, while Joe Morgan did it three times. The heaviest hitting outfield of all-time belonged to the Phillies way back in 1894. Sam Thompson. Ed Delahanty and Billy Hamilton combined for a .400 average. Andy Seminick is the only Phillies player ever to hit two homers in one inning,

connecting against Cincinnati at Schibe Park, June 2, 1949. THE BIGGEST INNING in Phillies history came in the sixth inning July 21, 1983, against the Cubs, with the Phils scoring 12 times. The longest game for the Phils also came against the Cubs, a 21-inning affair July 17,1918. The low last season, came with the batting average of Pete Rose. Rose hasn’t been mentioned so far and a great hitter is only noticed when he bats .245. Now for a few trivia questions that you can toss around and lode as if you know more than the next guy. Who was the last pitcher to win 30 games in a season? Denny McLain posted a 31-6 slate for Detroit in 1$68. Now McLain is on his way to the slammer in Florida. Who was the first black player to toss a no-hitter? Chicago Cub starter Sam Jones threw a 4-0 gem against Pittsburgh,, May 12,1955. When Jim “Catfish Hunter pitched his perfect game against Minnesota in 1967, the leftfielder was playing his first game for Oakland. Who was he? Joe Rudi started his first game for the A’s that day. WHO WAS THE losing pitcher in the first night game in World Series play? Eddie Watt took the loss pitching in relief for Baltimore against Pittsburgh Oct.l3,1971. Who was the first American League player to connect on a homerun in Canada? Chicago White Sox Richie Zisk belted the first against Toronto April 7, 1977. Who was the last playermanager to play^n the Major Leagues? Don Kessinger finished his tenure with the Chicago White Sox August 2, 1979. Kessinger appeared as a replacement at shortstop in his last game. I< don’t know if some of these baseball facts will turn you into a trivia expert, but it won't hurt. Baseball is one of those sports that just lends itself to silly questions on all aspects of the game. Let
me know if you have any questions that prove to be real stumpers. REMARKS: One way to the championship of any sport is the absence of injuries. With the injury to Franklin Edwards recently, the ?6ers will lack depth in the back court. Edwards was just showing signs of coming out of his long slump. With most of the forced vacations over for the Philadelphia Flyers, maybe they can get some teamwork started before the playoffs start. The Islanders from New York seem to be a good bet to take title number five as defense still proves to be the best way to win the Cup. Just ask the Edmonton Oilers. The U.S.F.L. is well under way but bad luck seems once again to be hurting the pro football league. Last year rain washed out a lot of big crowds and this season it seems each game they decide to put on television is a blowout. Last week I had a chance to see Marcus Dupree play fen* New Orleans and Jim Kelly for the Houston Gamblers. Both players are very exciting and great players. There isn’t a defense in the League that can stop the passing oame of Kelly and the Gamblers.
