Spring Fishing Off To Start at Cape

Fishing has finally started on the Jersey Cape. Cod, hake and blackfish (tautog) are being caught on the offshore wrecks. The first Jersey Cape boat to get out was the Starlight, skippered by Jim Cicchitti out of Blake’s Dock, Wildwood Crest. Boats are being readied for the start of mackerel season, and until the macks set in. wreck fishing will have to serve. Meanwhile, for those of you who are still trying, the Penn 285M reel we promised to the angler catching the first winter flounder has been awarded. Andy Anitsky of North Wildwood caught the first one reported to us and Andy will receive his fishing reel as we promised. The fish Andy caught came out of Scotch Bonnett on clam bait. Andy has been a first flounder reel winner before, and we’re always glad to make the presentation. Andy fishes hard and he earned the reel. Trout fishing season is also just around the comer for the fresh water fans. The closest (and only lake) to be stocked in Cape May County is Dennisville Lake. Most of the trout fishing there is on worms although a few trout are taken on lures at times. Winter flounders remain in short supply but the real inland waterway thrust will come around the early part of May when the fluke and bluefish move into the inland waterway. SHARK CLUB: The Miami Inn Shark Club has started activities for 1984. The club annually conducts a shark fishing contest. Winners get honored at an annual dinner and receive trophies for their efforts. Interested sharkers can contact Tim Mackev at 886-7968 or Capt. Jim SoUey at 886-7725 for details. Sharks: The Cape May County Department of Public Affairs, which sponsors the annual Cape May County Fishing Tournament, is planning to recognize sharks as part of the county’s 49th annual tournament, which is now under way. A growing popularity for shark fishing has fostered an increasing number of shark entries in

the contest. In 1984 and future years sharks wilhbe given award status. To discourage indiscriminate slaying of sharks, emphasis will be on tagging and releasing unless the shark is boated for mounting or for use on the table as food. A special shark release citation will be presented to anyone releasing a shark while fishing on a boat out of Cape May County ports. The citation will be similar to the ones issued to anglers who release marlin in the tournament. Tournament records indicate that at one time so few sharks were being entered that the county tournament judges took sharks into consideration when judging the rare fish divisions. THE COUNTY'S 49TH tournament is under way. A tide table and list of contest rules and regulations is available by writing the Department of Public Affairs, Box 365, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210. Party and charter boat directory: A 12-page booklet entitled “New' Jersey’s Charter and Party Boat Directory” is now available. The directory contains basic information on how to charter a boat, tips on party boat fishing and a port by port listing of over 200 charter and party Upset Win By Keltic’s CAPE MAY - John DeCamillo went on a oneman scoring binge as his five goals lifted Keltie News to an easy 7-2 upset victory over previously unbeaten Dellas Stores. With the score knotted at 1-1 after two periods, DeCamillo then broke out to score four goals in the final period as Kellie’s cruised to the win. The C-View got its first win of the season as it shut out the Cape May Volunteer Fire Co. team 3-0. Sanding* Dellas Store 8-1 Keltie New* S-4 Cape May Volunteer Fire Oo. S-8-1 C-View 1-7-1

boats. For each boat the size, captain's name, address and phone number, boat size and passenger capacity are listed. Species fished for and the fishing seasons are listed. To obtain a copy send a stamped (37 cents) envelope to Boat Directory, Nacote Creek Research Lab., Route 9, Absecon, N.J. 08201. Make sure you use a No. 10 envelope or larger, since the booklet will not fit in a small envelope. Drag Settings: One of the most crucial parts of a fishing reel is the dray system. A smooth drag is a must, and it becomes more and more critical as the line test gets lighter. A drag that ‘chatters’ is usually under or improperly lubricated, heeds cleaning, or has nought spots in the drag washers. Use of teflon or other smooth plastic washers has helped eliminate drag chatter. / WE ALWAYS TAKE apart our big game reels and smooth out the washers in those on fine sandpaper to make sure there is no high surface which will cause the drag to "grab”. Having'a smooth drag is only half the battle. The other half is to set the drag properly. Some anglers, particularly offshore trailers, actually use a scale. Others have learned to adjust by the ‘‘feel’ and they pull out the line against the feel. Innovative Engineering Services, Ind, of P.O. Box 260, Pennington, N.J., has perfected a new concept in setting drags with their ‘Drag-Setter’ unit. It works on spinning as well as casting reels. The drag will help save lost tackle as well as to help capture that big one ‘hat always seems to get away, according to Carmen Chianese, inventor of the Drag Setter. It comes in two models. The Model DS-1 meets the need of most anglers. It sells for 312.95. The Model DS-IG is the one for bluewater and bigger revolving spool reels. It sells for $24.95. Additonal infomation is obtainable by writing Innovative" Engineering Services. Box 260, Pennington, N.J. 08534.
