MU A Asks Audit Of Project Funds

Job Fair At Vo-Tech

COURT HOUSE - The Cape May County Vocational Schools will conduct a job fair Monday and Tuesday. April 9 and 10. at the Crest Haven complex. Potential employers of graduates have been invited to visit the school and interview students. The event is planned as a learn-

ing experience for the students as well as an opportunity for employers and students to get acquainted. Those taking part will be guests of Jhe schools for lunch. For further information call William Moore, corrdinator of job placement for the schools.

SWAINTON - The County Municipal Utilities Authority has requested an audit by federal and state agencies of construction grants funds received by the authority since the wastewater treatment project began more than 10 y*ars ago. In a letter to Jacqueline E. Schafer, regional administrator. United States Environmental Protection Agency, and Robert E. Hughey, commissioner, New Jerse^Department of Enviromrental Protection. MU A executive Director George Marinakis wrote, “an audit at this time would be extremely helpful in regaining public con fidence in this authority's wastewater management program.” Marinakis said the MUA asked for the audit in light of the County Grand Jury indictments Feb. 9 against the PQA Engineering Co., two of its officers, and others, for alleged criminal offenses relating to engineering contracts with the authority. The $1 million negotiated settlement received the approval of Superior Court Judge Philip Grucdo. PQA bad claimed it was owed $800,000 more than the approved amount for past services actually rendered. “Since PQA Engineering Co. has provided essentially all of the MUA’s engineering services since 1973,” Marinakis' letter continued^. - 'and given the nature.or the charges set fourth in the indictments, the MUA requests that a complete audit of all billings associated with the authority’s U.S.E.P.A. funded projects be initiated inflnoduitaiy.” All of the authority's wastewater management program is being implemented under the direction of the federal and state /environmental agencies and funded in large part with grant funds from both the federal and stefe governments. Marinakis emphasized that the audit request is not being made with knowledge of any irregularities or improprieties in any of the billings submitted by PQA Engineering Co. “We are concerned as to tbfc continued availability of knowledgable personnel within PQA Engineering Co. who are, familiar wfih the internal record keeping associated with fmadriri and billmg data Required for audit'^purpoBes,"'he said.
