Restoring Greenery

According to Larry Newbold, Cape May County Agricultural Agent, lawns that have been covered with salt water need special attention to prevent further injury.Storms and high tides can result in injury' to lawns and shrubs, and action should be taken. Lawns and shrubs flooded by salt water and salt spray should be irrigated well with plenty of fresh water. Failure to act soon will result in salt injury to lawns, shrubs, and prized evergreens. This injury

will not show up immediately, but will become very evfbent the next spring and summer. An application of agricultural gypsum should be applied to lawns at the rate of 40 to 80 pounds per each 1,000 square feet of lawn area. Fresh water should be used to wash the gypsum into the soil. Gypsum will help to improve the soil structure and then help to remqve salt from the soil. Gypsom has very little effect on soil acidity (pH) so, this should not be a concern to gardners

Sounds

By Charles P. Lamey

Utopia’s latest album, Oblivion (Passport/JEM) is an extremely fine release. As can be expected, the group takes both a progressive and pop point of view. In the past this has had mixed results but this is probably their most consistent outing. Several tracks, most notably the current single “Crybaby," could work their way onto the charts. Utopia has definitely developed a group sound and it’s doubtful anyone wiH refer to it as Todd Run-

dgren'i backing group anymore. Todd is just one of the boys and it seems to suit him well. Genesis’ new one (Atlantic) has rightfully found a home at the top of the charts with its catchy tunes, strong musicianship, and, of course, the appealing voice of Phil Collins. Maybe the group doesn’t take as many chances as longtime followers would like, but Genesis still creates richly tortured modern pop. It took a while to get this record released here, but blues fans should be thrilled to know Albert Collins and The Icebreakers' Live In Japan (Alligator, P.O. Box 60234, Chicago. IT, 60660) has finally been issued in the States. This is a smokin’ record with plenty of hot guitar breaks from Collins and smooth, soulful saxophone work from the great AX. Reed. Albert Collins has a wonderful band and he consistently releases ending music. Check our his other albums, too. While Germany's Neaa l both the female singer and name of the band) has won over America with the cute tune “99 Luftbalioons,’' her album (Epic) doesn't fare as well. Instead. of the bouncy, unique sound (thanks to having the lead vocals in German) the rest is typical, though professional, mainstream rock. It s and all performed nicely enough but unlike the fait single it lacks personality Neu hat a let of potential at a lead vocalist, but there are still problems (or he, to wk out Nevertheless LuftbaUoos" is a joy to hear on the rUh.
