Crusaders' Pitching May Give Them Edge

With the spring season Hitting should be the key baseball, softball and track * for most county team* this get underway for. high season in baseball but school students Let's take Wildwood Catholic will a look at how things shape once again rely on a strong up. pitching staff. Back this

season are left-handers Dave Yelardo and John . Pareja and righty Joe Aita. When not on .the mound, the trio wiir provide much ofthe hTtUng . for the Crusaders, backed by Marty Marcoiongo and his .333 average at second base Strong pitching and good defense will keep W'ildwood Catholic in many dose i games this season. CROSS-TOWN RIVAL Wildwood-^an’t match the pitching of the Crusaders but can hit with the best. Three time all-star Bill Osborn will carry- his impressive stats -to shortstop this season as the Warriors hope a few position changes will make a difference. Qsborn should be able to cover a lot of ground at short; he played centerfield last season, with his quickness that provided him with 39 steals in 40 attempts. Also moving to a new slot • will be senior Greg Cardaci. Cardaci roamed leftfield last year, but will handle the catching duties this spring Returnees Charlie OTiaia and Tom Sawver will bolster the outfield positions. Inexperienced pitching «tiH seems to be the only problem facing coach Tom Ottaviano. A TWIDDLE TOWNSHIP, the loss of Rich Rhinesmith will real--ly be felt. With theirformer ace gone to the college ranks, the Panthers don’t seem to have much pitching at- all, but a few sticks will provide some

runs

Leadoff hitter Tim Champion will bring his .430 back this season. Champion was quite effective last season at getting on base to make things happen for the Middle offense. Backing Champion will be .300 hitters Keith Maund. John Marsden and Phil Mean.

.Graduation really hurt Lower Cape May for the upcoming season Dan Brown will be looked to anchor ihe pitching staff for th^ Capers, coming of a good season last year. Brown pitched very well at times in his junior year Scan Brennen returns with his .346 average to hold down second base. Ocean City will undertake its first CAL I schedule with §even starters returning. Petr Thomas and Joe Jones wUj lead the wayin producing runs while Dennis Jones carries his .351 average at shortstop. Dave Miller and Brian Leslie will handle the pitching chores for the Raiders. »

It seems to be a

rebuilding year for most Cape May County schools, but enough good hitting and some pitching will make for a good baseball season.

THE BIGGEST STORY in girl s softball last season was the pitching arm of Ocean City's Sondra Reeves. Reeves picked up^ 19 wins for the Raiders against just two setbacks. Also returning is all-star catcher Sue North, who drove in 14 runs with her .438 average. O.C. will compete in the CAL I this season and the battery of Reeves and North should produce another fine

season.

Things don't look that good for the rest of the county teams as most seem to be working on fundamentals Doris Baldv will lead the Wildwood squad this season at shortstop with Jennifer Johnson holding down third. Coach Chris Garrison continued to look for pitching on the Warrior team as play got underway this week.

LOWER CAPE MAY won only six games last year and the rebuilding does not appear to be over yet. The majof task for the Capers this season will beto develop a pitching^taff. . None of the local teams will compete for the title this spring except for Ocean City. Ocean City will challenge for another title, this being in boys' track. The Red Raiders will go head to head with last season champ Vineland early in the season Jonathan Dice will try to fill a void left by graduation in the weight events. Dice will partietpate in the shot put and the discus. Eugene Watts will be busy this spring, .competing in six different events. Leon Brown-will be the number one man in the sprints while John Brothers and Steve Leypoldt will be the pole vaulters in CAL I, action. Over in the CAL II, Lower Cape May willfeature William Boyce in the speed events. ONE SPEEDSTER who will be missed is Tim Saddler. who qualiUfd for states last year fdTMiddle Township. Coach Norm Smith hopes to rebuild quickly to salvage a decent season. Wildwood will bank on Ross Huffnagle to carry the Warriors in the long distance event? this season REMARKS: A lot of talk has been going around about the trade of Gar? Matthews to the Chicago Cubs. I like the deal because the Phillies have the guts to complete die youth movement . The Phils could afford to give up Matthews after getting Glenn Wilson from Detroit. Fans in the motor city were just as upset over los-

ing Wilson as Phillie fans were when “Sarge” was reunited ^with Dallas Green. From what I read, Wilson can play. . As usual, we, will just have to wait and see what happens before the trades the Phillies made can be graded.

Lori Collins. Debbie Todd and Jennifer Snyder return to the Middle Township lineup that saw five starters graduate this season. The Panthers plan to use speed and aggressive play. Wildwood Catholic will look to improve on a dismal season under first-year coach Elaine Barcus. The entire infield is returning for the Crusaders. Around-the-hom. it goes Roberta News. Sandy Halverson. Kelly Gallagher and Eileen Murray.

WILDWOOD — The Recreation Department will start play in the night softball league May 14. Any team desiring to join the league is asked to call the Wildwood Recreation Center. 522-5837.
