Pharmacy Robbery Law Moves

WASHINGTON. D C. - The House Crime Subcommittee has completed action on pharmacy robbery legislation, introduced by Crime Subcommittee Chairman Bill Hughes <DNJ). and ranking Republican Hal Sawyer < RMD. "Robbery and burglarly offenses, including those involving drugs, are and should remain the primaryresponsibility of state and local government. State and local law enforcement authorities are wellqualified and committed to bringing these criminals to justice. However where these offenses reach across state lines and have an impact far beyond the community involved — such as in the case where interstate thefUrings are involved, or large amounts of federallycontrolled drugs are stolen and diverted to the illegal market — federal authorities need to be brought into the case." Hughes said Although Hughes believes much of the authority provided in this legislation is available in existing law. it has become clear that the Justice Department will not prosecute these cases until new. specific authority is given, he said.
