fishing forTsea bass, blackfish and porgies was set aside by many, as was the pursuit of bludfish jn May | and early June As a resuit 1 of the shift in interest and emphasis, lots of other kinds of fishing suffer from

INLAND WATERWAY fluke fishing usually gets started around May .K The first real signs of summer fluke come w ith the disappearance of winter flounders from the inland waterways as they head for deeper water in the ocean As the winter flounders get closer to the inlets it is a sign that the water ts warIning up The last couple of days of the winter flounder fishing season often yield a mix between winter and summer flounders. Usually this is near the inlets There is a lot of excellent fluke fishing inside. Minnows are the primary bait A lot of early fluke are caught on fresh cut herring strips Herring can be caught in a number of fresh water rivers whidh lead to the ocean. Head of the River where .it passes under Delsea Drive is one spot. Menantico River also has herring in it. Batsto is a good place to pick up some fresh herring. We have picked up some casting a small metal spoon at both the jetties at Higbee s Beach and at the end of Second Street jetty. Some

years-for winter flounders Tins is one of the better catches we’ve heard about for sbmr time It is for sure the fjest.we heard of in 1984 Few fishermen are making any effort at all in the waters behind the.
WUdwoods.
? At one time, some of the j best spots for winter flounders included the in-
anglers even, pick up herring on trips to the Delaware River above Trenton. Another good summer flounder trick, especially early in the season is to fish light tackle with 1/4 to 3/8 oz bucktails Ued directly to the end of the line. Bait the bucktail with a minnow or a piece of squid . Fluke belly is also a good bait .'Or. .combine the minnow with a bit of fluke belly or-squid. FLUKE FISHING is ex citing fishing, especially early in the season. Lots of doormat fluke are caught, so it is wise to carry a landing n& when you fish fluke' in the inland waterways: By the time the fluke fishing starts in early May, most of the back-water liveries will be open for business. Boats and motors «an be rented for 'fluke fishing if you do not have your own rig available or‘if yours is too big for proper drifting around in shallow waters in the back bays. There is one other kind of inland waterway fishing which often- goes .begging early in the season Few anglers ever try k or ever hear about it. That’s bluefish on the flats Usually in May. big blues come into the inland .waterways and prowl around on the flats. They are more fun to catch in that shallow water than a tarpon They jump equally as well. To fish these , back water blues, casting tackle is needed. A fly rod is one of the best ways to go Surface poppers or subsurface streamers will catch blues on the flats So will swimming plugs such as the Re^el Small surface splashers and poppers cast with a spuming rod also will pick up blues. The best way to fish is to ease your way up on the flats and then drift across which ever way the wind takes you ^lan on push-poling a lot. Much of the water you’ll * fish in is too shallow to run Donate Blood, Jj.
your motor. Shallow water blues won’t take much motor noise anyway. If you want a welcome change for some early season action, try back water blues or inland waterway fluke from small boats in the early season.
