Our Readers Write Dune Drive:' ^JPTiere Shore I Meets Store

To TW Editor:

1 ' -v ^4

In your issue of March 28 there appeared letters from } Or Russell Down and Robert 11 Wilson Both deserve s«iouS attention, cannot be shrugged off by,anv person of

intelligence

If being a resident of Avalon for'rnany years, shall com-

ment on the communication from Wilson-

• J'.well recall that, during the -Ws and '50s. during the reign of our late Mayor Edith. M Greenan. builders and developers were permitted to bulldoze Avalon's dunes, the sand therefrom was (rucked off to be used as fill for building lots. Yo- there were, fast bucks to be gleaned

therefrom '

ALL WERE .TOLD, ‘and many believed, that these dunes only obstructed a view of the sea. So was begun a pernicious pattern that-Ylas.. during ensuing years, brought the erosion that has left Avalon virtuallv beachless . . . Of course Mayor Greenan did rename Second Avenue, now known as Dune Drive, where shore meets store Rut so may the sea, and this problem is a plague that increases yearly as erosion continually eats away our once broad and beautiful beach. basUohed by high dunes these reinforced by cedar, holly.'haybertry ’ A\ ALOV ALSO HAS a feflutiop^problem quite like that which Dr Russel! DS^prote^bout in Middle Township. •In rorent years our sewage disposal plant, built in the 1950s. ha^. due to an effort to create a mini-citv on a coastal garner island with town houses ".condos and group rentals, become inadequate to cope with ihe volume of sewage during the peak summer season Sojaiiy excess is trucked to our inland waterway and dumped into the waters For summers past! certa in areas thus (fentaminated were off limits for swimmers Still anotherjhazard is the intrusion of salt'water into our f drinking water and it has been suggested'that the water we drink be hoi led f6r at least five minutes Those who-read what I have written mayVonder why I. write of errors of almost 40 years ago. 1 do so because these contribute so largely to our present situation Mayors Greepan. McLaren and a number of those who followed made errors beyond belief, errors of venality of stupidity, perhaps'both,-so I do not envy our present Mayor Rachael Sloan, wh6 has inherited almost 40 years of borough mismanagement W WALLACE ^MITH » Avalon

Incinerator Progressive To The I

Recognize Developer As Enemy

To Th* Editor:

Middle Crossroad To The Editor: The discussion concerning sew erage in Cape May Court House is healthy, and should continue. I find your journalistic treatment of the problem outstanding • ' RerhajX a side issue should also be included in this discussion; that is. the futu/e.of Middle ToWnship ciL?.j * I ‘ ,EVE we here in ^ are at a crossroad. ^Should we-remain as we are now . or should we explode and becom^the absolute hub of Cape May County? . Should we encourage an influx of ratables such as a f’oriderosa Restaurant, or should we place an ev^p increasing burden on the local homeowner? • Something to think about. . EDROSENBERG Cape May C^Hirt House

1>o Republican candidates - SamuelAtubbs and Debi de la Cretaz — for the Lower Township’Council positions have repeatedly attacked the progressive idea of Lower Township feasibility study on an incinerator for trash removal. * i *. Incidentally, they never «fer any alternative solution to the impending problem of j? tremendous increase in the cost of trash removal facing our township. All they do is keep clairhing that Lower Township is superceding, the

county agencies.

Lower Township has been the leader in studying the possibility of an incinerator as a means of reducing jxir trash disposal cost. I might add that neighboring communities such as Middle Township are all interested in the possibilities presented by incineration. FIRST OF ALL. the township could build an incinerator which would probably save Lower Township at least several hundred thousand Hollars in tipping fees per year. In the meantime, it would alse pay for the installation. True, the county M.U.A. could block this project, but if they considered the welfare of the taxpayer in,Lower TSUgship. they would cooperate and give it their blessing. I that instead of worrying about a few thousand dollars spent by Lower Tow nship on this worthwhile project. these aforementioned two people should attend and investigate some of the minion dollar projects done by the Cape May County Freeho'ders. Could it be these two candidates are prejudiced because they are dependent on the Republican organization for campaign support? ^ c

I applaud Robert H. Wilson's March 28 letter in the Herald/Lantern. '“T'n? The quiet people who establisMitthe cottages and private homes on these barrier islands should never have let political pow er-get into the hands of callous real estate ..manipulators. All private home owners should face up to grim reality and recognize the' vulpine “developer’’ for what he is: an enemy. - I think that it is more than money-greed, however, which impels these human predators to commit their crimes against the natural environment. I believe they have warped minds as well as stoney hearts, and that they are responsible for the appalling human wreckage strewn piteously upon the shore by the inevitable natural upheavals over which'none of us has any control. MAN IS SUPPOSED to be a reasoning animal. He perverts and is criminal when, for the sake of money, he destroys the delicate balance of the ecology .on this thin edge of the continent. We are proved traitors to ourselves as reasoning animals and stand condemned as pure animal: predatory' and soulless here. What price churches and congregations if (as it is proved i. they so contemputuously prey upon the natural environment; and their more naive fellow men who came here to get away from the crimes of the cities? Who Cares About Thieves?

BY ZELNIK

My mail has taken a ^asfy turn, which I attribute to jealousy over my CantUr vacation. But even snotty letters

deserve answers: w

B.C. of Nummy: How Jould you write a column in Cape May County last week a^d not mention the March storm? Answer; Storm’’ I live -n Stone Harbor, and nobody told me. 1 don t listen to the radio. I heard no mention of it on Channel 9.1 slept until n^on^s usual on March 29 and had no trrtible driving to w-ork. I have noticed that the beach is i about meet lower. I jus' assumed someone swiped some ‘i.’inrl hilt lilrr* ot-om-nn*. *»_. . * . .

* f ; •• • ‘““a* maicu^aanu naa no tmible driving to work. I have noticed that the beach is about KTfeet lower. I just assumed someone swiped som^ sand but. like everyone else in Cape May Countv; I don't let myself get concerned about a little thievery ' C.S. of Goshen Crossing: Why did you disgust us with

your report on going to a bullfight?.

Answer: That reminds me; I forgot to teU you about the cockfight I attended. Did you know that gamecocks are bred lor fighting, reach their peak after one-year and usually live to be 14 to 5 years old’ The chicken you ate last night, on the other hand, was dispatched after about

60 days.

G.L. OF BEESI.EVS.POINT: How dare you compare yourself to a pnest by suggesting readers hold a raffle to buy you a car? Answer: I apologize." ve gone through several personality changes ever since taking the vows of poverty and chastity required of all who move to Cape May County. I became further confused upon learning that angel fish and monk fish are one and the same. T.Y of Wildwood Vunction: I empathized with your remarks about laugh/lines. I, too. am unwrinkled But I ge, L ‘ s i^ p ,ines ’’ from laying my head on a pillow all night They used to disappear in minutes, but. as I age they last longer. Any advice? Answer: I suffered from the same problem, which got progressively worse until my sleep lines were lasting 72 hours Now I lie flat on my hack and keep my head still by placing bound volumes of the Herald and Lantern on each side of my head. The sleep lines are gone. Now- I have

back-of-the-neck lines. -

W.D. of Muddy Hole Island: Why is so much of your

writing cynical and bitter?

Answer: I was happy and carefree when I came here I ve been depressed ever since I applied for membership in the stale chapter of the Society of Mayflower Descendants and was turned down on the flimsv grounds that my parents arrived on a largest and rfenere 300 years R.T. OF CEDAR GROVE: Okay, hot shot: what happened to your plans to publish a collection of vour columns

m a hard-cover book selling for $15.95?

Answer: I regret to report that a marketing survey reached the startling conclusion that only persons with the first name of Fred would buy my book. So the idea’s been abandoned. I will however, read my columns over the telephone for a rat® 50 cents a minute. (Most columns

take about three minutes to read.)

W.A. ol King Crab Landing: I saw you in a local restaurant and you were a mess: tieless, no socks scratchm^ yourself Is lhat how a journalist is supposed to Answer: I seldom wear ties because thev cut off circulaion to the brain, causing the earned arteries to atrophy, it s been proven that wearing a tie reduces one s lifespan by 4Vj yeare That explains why there are more old

fishermen than,bankers.

1 wear a TIE. 1 become light-headed and giddy Thus I only wear one when writing this column As for going soc&lfss. that way whenever I have a spare mmine I can hyfo get the sand from between my toes Ftnalfy. the scratching rfwvealed a long time ago that I mS r0m "? nter l** 1 A swetl Udj ' ' ,1 Rio Cr inxle wrote to advise me to soak m a hot tub for 20 minutes, then -nib all over with baby oil." She also said that, if I have the itch in my ears, I should use a hair dryer on each one for five

minutes.

**• *, “dy hove a shower stall and no hair - vcr 1 a classified ad next week: "WANTED: w oman with bathtub and good lungs to blow in my eare."
