—Spring Reflection— Oh, world of newly minted green Where apple trees in blossom lean Against old barns as though to dress Their sagging ruins in comeliness; 1 am aware that this could be, The last year spring may offer me The mingled smell of earth and rain. Or make me feel alive again When gentle winds of April pass. Between these frail new blades of grass; / I am aware that warm, black loam And weeping willow's pale green foam May not again be commonplace. That with one stroke death can erase All I have loved, each leaf and stone And every April I have known; But more than this I am aware That He who taught my heart to care For each wild, lovely, mortal thing' Shall give my heart eternal spring Viney Endfcott

Vitamins, when to take them and in what quantities. are some of the most .frequently asked questions by readers of Health Watch. We will spend the next several weeks reviewing recent findings with regard tq Zinc. Vitamin B6 and Vitamin D. Public enthusiasm for taking vitamins is beginn ing to concern many physicians. as a number of vitamins become toxic in large doses and are thus veryt-harmful. Fantastic claims are often made on vitamin packages, but the reality is that nutrition is a relatively new science, and many of these claims have no scientific basis. I am frequently dismayed when patients show me large bottles of huge "horse sized" vitamin pills they have picked up at the super market or health food store. They don't realize that the size is caused by fillers used by the company to make the product loo^ more substantial, and'm some cases the doses of vitamins far exceed that appropriate for healthy living. With vitamins, more is not alwavs better. VITAMIN D CAME into public awareness just after the Industrial Revolution. As people increasing move their place of work indoors, away from the sun. the disease of Vitamin D deficiency. or "rickets" (which causes bone malformation) became rampant. It was soon learned that people living in cold, cloudy areas, those with dark complexions, and those in heavily cloudedover areas (from air pollution) were also at ^increased risk. This was because the body manufactures Vitamin D naturally. , The primary role of Vitamin D is in regulating the use of calcium and phosphorus in the body This affects the formation and function of muscles, teeth, nerves and bones Recent studies have shown that D may also have a'role in insulin release from the pancreas Twenty different forms of vitamin have been

trekked through muddy March

just as the break bell rang. The spring floods drown our seasoned fording ways
or wash them from what we once knew
The banks ip^pigots seep
every yard or so

Surface stones seem
beyond our leaping range
or too jagged for a jump

found in the body, but to date scientists do not know what all the differences signify Too much Vitamin D can cause problems Becuase of its role in calcium metabolism^ excess Vitamin D can lead to the formation of calcium deposits in the kidneys, blood vessels, heart and lungs Accordingly, except for those special cases listed below , the best wav to get your daily calcium is through your diet : AS YOl KNOW, many foods are fortified with vitamins. Those who dnnk two glasses of .fortified milk each day are meeting their vitamin D require-, menl. as are those who spend a large percentage of their day w orking*outdoors in the sunlight Vitamin D supplements in the form of vitamin pills are important to many elderly individuals who are housebound, receive little sun and may have diifrculty tolerating milk products. Individuals of any age who are lactose intolerant may need D supplements, as will those on pertain anti-convulsant drugs and those with ^ome of the rarer liver and kidneydiseases Infants, pregnant and breast feeding women and adolescents need the greatest dietary intakes of Vitamin D. according to the U.S. government. 400International Units. WHEN THIS LEVEL cannot' be, reached, supplements may be a consideration From age 19 to 22, 300 International Units are recommended and for
adults over age 22. 200 Units. In view of both the importance and potency of Vitamin D you would not want to put yourself onto supplements If you suspect your diet is partial ly deficient in Vitamin D or you don't get out into the sun much, discuss this with your doctor S/he can decide what level of supplement will be
best suited to you Many people have made, themselves sick through giving 'tftemselves ex cessive amounts of vitamins, unusually high doses o( minerals arid other supplements.' so ex perience and caution are important in determining your need for nutrient supplement* Health Watch it a public education project of the American Cancer Society, of which Dr Beitman is co chairman in Cape May County
