COURT HOUSE - The Cape May County Senior Citizens Juried Art Contest and Exhibition at the County Library Thursday. .May 31, will culminate 10 years of according recognition to the artistic talent among the elderly population on the Jersey Cape A decade has gone by since Mrs Ann Zahora. who is now the Director of the New Jersey Division on Aging, gave rise to the idea of a state-wide senior citizens art contest. The inilal plan included the involvement of Offices on Aging throught the state. Each locality would sponsor an art show for senior citizens and the winners could become eligible to enter the larger state contest The enthusiasm by the artists in each county offered the promise of it's becoming an artnual event.

The senior citizen painters and sketchers of Cape May County were equally responsive to the first art show held in their behalf. IN THOSE EARLY years, the Cape May county contest and exhibitions were held in Rio Mall. The commercial aspect of the ma!l was not too evident and it provided ample space for the art displays and opportunity for viewing by the public. As business enterprises began to flourish, the Office on Aging considered the possibility of having the art show in a different setting. Finally, in 1982 the County Library was selected as the new home > for the contest The County Libraryfacilities proved to be a practical as well as an aesthetic backdrop for the work of the senior citizens TK/i : convenient access i

_ ramp at the side of the main entrance of the building offered an easy means for the older people to move their pictures, easels and display stands to the contest area. The space on the main floor was. more than ade$iate for the arranging and presentation of individual exhibits. As interest in the |vent continues to grow the display may Ik- extended to the library's readilyadaptable and spacious conference room Another advantage which evolved from, the re-location was the Vooperatiop of the libr^^s staff. Ms K a t It^e c n Duffy's assistance with arranging the exhibit area lent much success to each succeeding event. t Using the county library s a setting for the contest as been termed unique Any senior citizen artist ho wishes to enter this year's contest and exhibition may obl^n a brochure with the details and instructions, along with the required applications, from the Office on Aging; Nutrition Sites; Senior I Centers or the County Library. Any person 60 years of age or older and a resident of the county is welcome to ; enter example of painting, sketching or graphic art The display w ill be open to sthe public 10 a m - 3 o.rn
