SS Services Cover Wide, Varied Range L ' \ \

BY DEL BROOKS The network of over 1,300 Seocial Security offices around the country makes the services of the Social Security Administration convenient to everyone. However, many people may not be fully aware of the range of services available from the Social Security Office. In general, there are six times when persons should get in touch with a "Social Security Office — to apply, for a Social Security number, when they stop work and wish to apply for retirement benefits, if someone in the family dies if someone in the family becomes too disabled to work for a year or more, at 65 even if the person .does not retire, or if someone in the farpily suffers permanent kidney failure. Processing claims for retirement, survivors, and disability benefits and helping people with their Medicare claims are a large part of the Social Security office's volume of • business

HOWEVER, the Social I Security office also handles claims for supplemental ; security income (SSI) which makes payments to i people who are 65 and over or blind or disabled with limited • ncom,e and resources. Many of the 3.9 million persons receiving SSI nationwide are also among the 36 million people receiving Social Security benefits. SSI payments are paid from Federal general revenues, not from Social Security taxes. Although Medicare bills are paid by insurance companies that serve as „ "intermediaries'' for the government, the Social Security office prt>cesses the original application for Medicare wich establishes eligibility. People can call the Social Security office if they have problems with their claims for Medicare reimbursement of medical bills. Besides handling claimsrelated problems, the Social Security office is also geared to respond with just about any kind of help a person needs in j understanding his or her rights and responsibilities under the programs it administers. This activity may range from answering general inquiries about Social Security or SSI to helping people check the earnings credited to their Social Security record or changing their names in Social Security records. THE SOCIAL Security office has a variety of informational materials that are useful to organizations, j schools, groups, and other I agencies interested in informing people about specific aspects of the Social Security programs. These include leaflets, films, slides, and news stories and columns suitable for newsletters and organizational publica^ tions. Social Security representatives are also available as speakers for any program a group may wish to sponsor. In recent years a number of private publishers have published books on Social Security. Some advertisements have offered to provide Social Security information for a fee. However, all information about Social . Security benefits and programs are provided by the Social .Security Office without' charge. Most Social Security matters can be handled bytelephone. In fact, it's a good idea te call first before coming to the office That way we may save you a trip. If your business is not urgent, it is best to arrange your call so as to avoid peak Social Securitybusiness hours The best time to call is in the afternoon during the latter half of the month. Our number is 800-272-1111. Q. How do I check mv Social Security earnings record? j A. If you call the office « we can send you a special J form for this purpose. You f send it to Social Security ] and they'll send you a < statement showing the ear- ' nings credited to your j record since you started I working under Social 1 Security. Q: I applied for retire- \ mdht benefits at the Social Security office -near my hom^. Now I want to report

a change in my work and earnings. Can I report this information to the office near where I'm working? A. Yes. The Social Security office is like your bank — each branch is a full service office designed to handle the full range of services. Q. I have Medicare hospital insurance, but I didn't sign up for Medicare medical insurance. Now I'd like to do that. Is it too late? A. No. it is still possible

to get medical insurance You can sign up for it during any "general enrollment period". A general enrollment period is held Jan. 1 through March 31 each year. However, your monthly premium will be 10 percent higher than the basic premium for each 12 months you could have had medical insurance but were not enrolled. Also, your protection Will not start until July 1 of the year you enroll.
