The offshore fishing event has been recognized as one of the leaders in the marlin tag-and-release program as part of the marlin conservation and research study. The tournament is primarily a release event.
Anglers get points for releasing a marlin unharmed rather than to return it to the dock for weigh-in. Most of the white marlin caught in the 27-year history of the event have been tagged and/or released. Faraco said. Fish boated and returned to the dock are weighed and credited with one point per pound. Released fish earn 75 points. Additional prizes are being added for dolphin, wahoo, tuna and blue marlin. Tuna entries are restricted to fish weighing over 25 pounds, Faraco said. The event centers on competition between individual boats and teams. Crew members fish for total white marlin points for the boat. Each boat is permitted six anglers and five rods, according to tournament rules. Only
