Blooming to Honor the Dutch Tulip Festival Transforms City
CAPE MAY - The third annual Tulip Festival will be held at the Rotary Bandstand Park amidst thousands of tulips to celebrate the city's Dutch heritage. Sponsored by the Greater Cape May Chamber of Commerce and the City of Cape May, the Tulip Festival will feature participation by manycommunity groups and merchants. Opening ceremonies will begin with a serenade by the Hoffnagle Band at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 28, then festival goers will be welcomed by Bob Mullock, v president of the Chamber of Commerce and the CityFathers of Cape May. The new Tulip Festival Queen will be crowned by 1983 Queen Anne Reagan. Entertainemnt during the Tulip Festival will include music by the Hoffnagle Band of Wildwood, and from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, a special concert by the Lulu Temple Shrine Band arranged by Arthur Doran, band concert coordinator for the city. Spectators are urged to bring their own chairs for this first band concert of 1984, which will be held at the Rotary Bandstand in the center of the Tulip Festival festivities on Lafayette Street. THE JERSEY CAPE Performing Arts Guild will contribute to the entertainment offerings with a puppet play, "The Little Dutch Boy Who Saved the Day", adapted for the state by Hovan Cheek. The tradi-
tional folk tale in puppet performance will be directed by Adriana Warner. Puppeteers and voices will be Eileen Elia, Jaymie Elia and MaryKate Dunwoody. The puppets have been made by Peg Martin and the illustrations are bySusan Senior. The performances of "The Little Dutch Boy Who Saved the Day " will begin about 11 : 15 a.m. Saturday, and continue several times each afternoon of the festival on the grounds of RotaryPark. The Cape May CountyArt League plans to contribute to the festival with "Art In The Park", its popular participation project from 11 to 2 Saturday and noon to 2 Sunday. Children are welcome to participate and" make a print of a tulip from one of a variety of media, from vegetable prints to fingerpaints. A modest donation will be asked of children who wish to make more than one print to cover the cost of the art materials. Joanne Reagan's School of Dance students will entertain at the festival with demonstrations of klompendansing, the traditional Dutch folk dancing in wooden shoes, and straatwassen or "streetwashing the Dutch custom of washing the streets which keeps the tiny country so spotless. The 36 boys and girls will be outfitted in Dutch costumes, including lace hats for the girls, black hats for the boys, and wooden shoes for all. The mothers of the students made their costumes to contriubte to the colorful dancing demonstrations. The dancing will take place several times during both days of the Festival. THE MID-ATLANTIC Center for the Ants will participate with a special "Tulip Garden TrolleyTour" leaving from the Rotary Bandstand at Lyle Lane 11 a.m. to 3 p.m Saturday, April 28. and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. April 29. The unguided tour will take visitors past the
most noteworthy plantings of tulips throughout the city. -v
