Concerts, Dance Enliven Festival —
(From Page 10) concert of the 1964 band concert season for. the Tulip Festival 2 to 4^, p.m. Saturday. Arthur Doran, band concert coordinator for the city, has arranged for this festive concert, to be held at the bandstand in Rotary Park where the Tulip Festival will be in progress. Chairs- are
scarce, so those intending to stay to enjoy the entire concert should bring their own folding chairs. The students of Joanne Reagan School of Dance will entertain during the Tulip Festival on both Saturday and Sunday. Thirty-six vx»ys and girls in traditional Dutch costume, from lace hats to wooden
shoes, will dance the Klompendanse, a traditional folk dance of Holland. It is a social type of dancing like the square dance in this country, and is done in wooden shoes, giving it the name. The students will also demonstrate the Dutch tradition of straatwassen, or street-washing, which is
an old custom of washing the streets and steps with brooms and mops. It is stilk observed in The Netherlands today. In the event of rain on the festival dates. Convention Hall has been reserved to shelter the activities. Convention Hall is on the Boardwalk on Beach Drive at Gurney Street.
The tupils (tew-lip-uh)is of the lily family. The name derives from the Turkish word for turban, tulbend, which the flower resembles. The beautiful varigated colors of tulips are the result of a virus attack while the bqlbs. are in -storage. This'is frequently done deliberately.
Tulip seeds and bulbs have been used as food. The English experimented with them during the 17th Century, -but as the bulbs were so expensive, their use in. the kitchen was short-lived. The Dutch used them as food when starving under the German occupa tion during World War II. However, Hollanders didn't find them very palatable.
