Colorful Tulips Are Garden, Trivia Treats
The tulip is a flower belonging to the lily family which came from Southern Europe and Asia. The bulb brought to Europe in the 1500s is genus Tulipa, species JT - gesneriana. It was developed from a tulip of Asia Minor which was brought to Vienna from Constantinople, now Istanbul. The name tulip comes from a Turkish word which means turban because the blossoms look like little turbans. After the tulip was brought to Europe it became the most fashionable flower in both England and Holland. A craze for tulips developed in Holland between 1634 and 1 637. Called tulipomania, ■ the craze resulted in individual bulbs being sold for very high prices. People invested their fortunes in tulips as investments, and many lost their fortunes in the tulip market until finally the v government was forced to regulate the Lade in the bulbs. Tulip cultivation is one of the most important industries in The Netherlands today. Millions of bulbs are pro-
duced every -ear, of nearly 2,000 different varieties. These thousands of varieties have developed from a few s >ecies. Among the most popular garden varieties today are the DarWin, the Cottage, and several fringed varieties, which differ in shape and blooming dates from early to late spring. Tulip flowers grow from bulbs, and the leaves and flower stem grow directly out of the bulb.. Hie stem grows from few inches in the dwarf varieties to as much as two feet high. The bulb usually develops only one large bell-shaped flower at th' tip of its stem. The flowers may be either single or double. They usually grow erect on the stem and may be of almost any color, from brilliant white to almost black, with the most popular colors being v. scarlet and bright yellow. The flower, may become streaked with other colors because of virus diseases which affect the color but not the health of .the plants. While tulips bloom in the spring, gai ieners usually plant the bulbs in the autumn. The tulips require
well-drained loamy soil of average • richness. While tulips can be grown from seed, it takes from three to seven years for a seed to produce a flowering bulb. The color of tulips includes nearly two-thirds of the spectrum, making it the most colorful of all flowers. Some tulip varieties have a fragrance that challenges any rose. ^ There are over 100 species of tulips, with thousands of varieties. The tulip has been known in America at least since 1640, when the Dutch settP\^ ed on Manhattan Island. Apparently Captain Mey didn't bring any tulip bulbs on his voyage. Tulip pests include I moles, rabbits, mice, slugs, ' aphids, mites, and bulb flies. Planting in wire mesh baskets and the use of naphthalene flakes can help protect the bulbs. .
