Gene Clark was one of rthe founding members of The Byrds, a group that \ has gone down in history as ' one of the most influential rock bands our country has M ever produced. They coinred the term folk-rock, and have inspired people from ?The Beatles ("Rain") to Tom Petty ("'American $ Girl"). They also took a ) relatively obscure folk musician by the name of |i Bob Dylan and turned him £ into a household celebrity ■ when they recorded his "Mr. Tamborine Man." r Since the group's demise. ' all of the original Byrds have continued in the music business Gene • Clark's latest solo effort F i r e b y r d (Allegiance/Takoma. 7525 " Fountain Ave., Hollywood, b CA. 90046) is one of the [ strongest, most rewarding albums an ex-Byrd has 1 come up with. yet. Firebyrd is a stunning collection of tunes that showcases Gene Clark's deep, rich voice and melancholy melodies His musical support is simple, straight -forward folk -rock and it never gets in his way There isn't a bad cut here with new Clark originals such as "Rain Song." "Vanessa." "Blue Raven."' and Rodeo Rider" instantly demanding to be noticed by radio programmers Still, the high points have to be his remake of "Mr. Tamborine Man.' that uses a haunting piano riff instead of The Byrds' jangling 12-string guitar and his cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could IRead My Mind." where he gives one of his most emo-
tional vocal performances ever. Gene Clark is one of rock's survivors. It's been nearly 20 years since he was regularly on national television and his songs were blasting out of radios — but that hasn't stopped him from making brilliant records such as Firebyrd Pick it up. After a rather quiet 1983. Los Angeles The Go Go's have returned "Talk Show" (I R S, i has brought a few minor changes to the band The production is a bit softer, often using keyboards instead of a pounding rhythm guitar and the songs aren't nearly as teen-oriented. Still. The
Go Go's have another con- 4 sistent. melodic and rock- • ing record. It's nice to have * them back. Dwight Twilley has been 9 kicking around the pop a scene for nearly a decade, g coming close to being the • star he's always hinted he • could be. but when falling • short of the mark. • Now. he's got a smash hit • with "Girls." and an album • "Jungle" (EMI America) * that should move him from J cult status into a mass au- 9 dience. Twilley has always 9 had the knack for writing 0 melodic rockers that show 0 a strong blend of Elvis a, Presley and The Beatles. • and this record is no excep- • tion. "Jungle" is Twilley 's • most consistent release • thus far. and it's nice to see • people are finally catching r up with this talent. ONE OF THE FIRST J bands I reviewed in this 0 comumn 12 years ago was 0. a hard rocking English 0 group by the name of i Slade They had six •. straight number one • singles in England, but • never made much of an im- ®. pression in the Stales Then last year. Los *" Angeles Quiet Riot took a # Slade tune. "(' mon Feel * The Noize," into the 0 American top- 10. and now • Slade is making another at- • !! tempt at find..ig tame and • [ fortune in the States
